A versatile athlete who excelled at football, hockey, baseball, lacrosse and wrestling, Gathercole was captain of both the Mac hockey team and the Canadian championship football team in his senior year. He later entered government service and was deputy minister of economics for Ontario as well as chairman of Ontario Hydro. George Gathercole died in 1986.
