An outstanding track and field competitor in high school, D'arcy developed an interest in fencing while studying law at Osgoode Hall. Upon returning to Hamilton, Lee organized the first fencing team at McMaster in 1930. His involvement as a coach, organizer and guiding force at the University continued for over 40 years.
