Marauders impress at season opening meet in London

LONDON, Ont. - The McMaster Marauders men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2022 OUA season at the Vigars & Salter Western Invitational on Saturday September 24th in near perfect running conditions.

FULL RESULTS

The McMaster men's team has high expectations this year after finishing the 2021 season with a bronze medal at the U SPORTS Cross Country National Championships in Quebec City. The maroon and grey did not disappoint in London, crossing the finish line early and often for a near perfect start to the season. The Marauders secured top position in the men's team event.

Max Turek (Whitby, Ont.) recorded the best time of the day by a varsity athlete, crossing the finish line in 24:34, just two seconds back of the overall leader. The fifth-year averaged three minutes and five seconds per kilometre. Right on his heels was teammate Alex Drover of Kingston, Ontario, finishing just two seconds back of Turek, good for second in the university grouping and fifth overall.

Sam Nusselder (Port Elgin, Ont.) and Dylan Alick (Mississauga, Ont.) finished fourth and eighth respectively with times of 24:59 and 25:22, making it four Marauders in the top eight. A youngster from Mount Albert, Lukas Vadeika completed the 8 kilometre course in 26:31 to round out McMaster's top five finishers.

The women's race saw two Marauders finish in the top six, led by Hannah Goodjohn's third place time of 30:03. The fourth-year from Mount Albert averaged 3:46 per kilometre. Three spots back was Rosalyn Barrett of Ottawa who was just 17 seconds behind her teammate.

Morgan McKeown (Minesing, Ont.) put in a 17th place time of 31:30. Fellow Marauders Kayla Overholt (Burlington, Ont.) and Kaitlyn Treleaven (Hamilton, Ont.) finished 21st and 22nd in the field of 67, recording times of 31:59 and 32:06. Collectively, the maroon and grey women finished third overall behind the Guelph Gryphons and Laval Rouge et Or.
