Alec Purnell selected for Team Canada at 2025 FISU Summer World University Games

HAMILTON, Ont. – Canada's athletics team has been unveiled for the 2025 FISU Summer World University Games, featuring McMaster's very own Alec Purnell (Dundas, Ont.)

Purnell will accompany Team Canada to Bochum, Germany from July 16th-27th where he will race both the 800m and 1500m.

After a record breaking season with McMaster, it is no surprise that Purnell has been selected to compete for Team Canada at the World University Games.

In the 2024-25 season, Alec dominated the competition, earning a U SPORTS national gold in the 3000m and bronze in the 1500m, and OUA gold in the 3000m, silver in the 1500m, This season, he set three McMaster indoor track records, in the 3000m, 1500m, and in the mile.

The last Marauder to compete at a FISU University Games was Nordic skier, Cara Pekos (Richmond Hill, Ont.) in the 2023 winter games in Lake Placid.

The last FISU summer games that Team Canada competed in were in 2019 where McMaster women's basketball head coach Theresa Burns served as an assistant for Canada and was joined by two of the stars of her McMaster team, including U SPORTS tournament MVP Linnaea Harper and Second Team All-Canadian Hilary Hanaka.

Canada will send approximately 140 athletes and is scheduled to participate in nine sports: archery, athletics, badminton, artistic gymnastics, rowing, rhythmic gymnastics, swimming, table tennis and taekwondo.
