HAMILTON, Ont. - The OUA finale is here and the McMaster Marauders distance track teams are ready to dominate their disciplines. McMaster will look to end the OUA season on a high note and secure as many medals as possible in the process. The maroon and grey have set numerous personal bests and even broken a few records over the past few months and will look to continue that momentum in Windsor this weekend.
   
The fourteen university track and field programs from across the province will come together to show who is the best. Athletes will represent the Brock Badgers, Guelph Gryphons, Lakehead Thunderwolves, Laurentian Voyageurs, McMaster Marauders, Ottawa Gee-Gees, Queen's Gaels, Toronto Varsity Blues, TMU Bold, Waterloo Warriors, Western Mustangs, Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks, Windsor Lancers and York Lions. The Guelph Gryphons brought home a pair of conference banners at last year's finale, the fifth straight time that both of their teams topped the track and field competition, and with a number of returners, will be poised to do the same at the 2023 OUA Track & Field Championships. 

After narrowly missing out on the podium last year in both the 1500m and 3000m events, the Marauder women have their sights set on snagging a medal this time around. A fourth-year life sciences student, Hannah Goodjohn is one of the cornerstones of the McMaster women's distance track team. Coming off a strong season in 2021-22 that saw her finish seventh in the 3000m and 12th in the 1500m at the OUA finale, the Mount Albert, Ont. local has been even more impressive this year. She posted a new personal best and set a new school record in Boston in the 3000m with a time of 9:33.36 and will enter the championships with the third best time in the conference.

The men's side of the maroon and grey's roster also offers specialty in the distance events and have cemented themselves as a force therein. Having been ranked in the U SPORTS Top 10 all season long, the Hamilton crew will be eyeing as many medals as possible in the events while also securing qualifications for the national event. Alex Drover is one of the most veteran runners on the Marauders men's roster and, as the reigning OUA silver medalist in the 3000m, is sure to be a threat in the distance events at this year's OUA Championships. His 1500m personal best time of 3:45.51 broke the previous Marauders record, and with the second best 3000m time of the year across U SPORTS – not to mention the third fastest time in the 1500m – the Kingston, Ont. native will look to close out his varsity career as a double OUA medalist.

Championship action gets underway this morning at 10am while the first Marauders will step on the track at 4:10pm.

2023 OUA Track and Field Championships Details

• Thirty-four (34) events shall be contested, seventeen (17) respectively for men and women as follows:
  • 7 individual track events: 60m, 300m, 600m, 1000m, 1500m, 3000m, 60m Hurdles
  • 3 relay events: 4x200m, 4x400m, 4x800m
  • 6 field events: High Jump, Pole Vault, Long Jump, Triple Jump, Shot Put, Weight Throw
  • 1 men's heptathlon: 60mH, Long Jump, Shot Put, High Jump, 1000m, 60m sprint, pole vault
  • 1 women's pentathlon: 60Mh, High Jump, Shot Put, Long Jump, 800m
• Points will be awarded to the respective teams for the top eight (8) final places per event. Point values will be as follows:
  • 1st place - 10 points
  • 2nd place - 8 points
  • 3rd place - 6 points
  • 4th place - 5 points
  • 5th place - 4 points
  • 6th place - 3 points
  • 7th place - 2 points
  • 8th place - 1 point
