McMaster dominates distance track disciplines in 2023 debut

WINDSOR, Ont. - The McMaster Marauders distance track teams opened the 2023 OUA season at the Can Am Classic on Friday January 13th in Windsor, Ont. where they faced some competition from across the province.

FULL RESULTS

The McMaster men's team earned two podium finishes in the 3000m event at the 2022 OUA Championships and looked to continue that momentum to start the 2023 season. The Marauders did just that, securing both the gold and silver medal in the distance event.

Alex Drover (Kingston, Ont.) had the best performance of the day, crossing the finish line in 8:11.21, just four seconds off the automatic qualifying time for the 2023 U SPORTS Track and Field Championship. Right on his heels was teammate Andrew Davies of Sarnia, Ont. who finished just three seconds back of Drover, good for second place and the silver medal.

Tynan Webb (Barrie, Ont.), Lukas Vadeika (Mount Albert, Ont.) and Connor Lashley (Mississauga, Ont.) finished eleventh, twelfth and thirteenth respectively with times of 8:48.22, 8:49.80 and 8:50.02, to round out the Marauders top five finishers.

The McMaster women dominated the 3000m race, making it a maroon and grey podium sweep. In a close contest, the top three Marauders battled one another with just 1.23 seconds separating first and third spot. Morgan McKeown (Minesing, Ont.) was the first runner to cross the finish line in a time of 10:03.39. Mount Albert's Hannah Goodjohn and Ottawa's Rosalyn Barrett had a photo finish for the silver, with Goodjohn just outdoing her teammate by one hundredth of a second.

Kaitlyn Treleaven (Hamilton, Ont.), Emma Elliott (Guelph, Ont.) and Victoria Lamb (London, Ont.) finished in fifth, sixth and eighth spot to round out the top 10 finishes for the Marauders. Treleaven's fifth place time of 10:10.35 was just seven seconds back of the gold medalist.

The Marauders ended the day with the 4x800m relay. Gustav Finley (Peterborough, Ont.), Connor Black (Whitby, Ont.), Noah Mulkewich (Hamilton, Ont.) and Henry Gage (Toronto, Ont.) represented McMaster in the men's race, finishing with a time of 7:54.24 to land on the podium in the bronze medal position. On the women's side, Hope Harnack (Cambridge, Ont.), Olivia MacAskill (Kanata, Ont.), Emma Elliott and Kayla Overholt (Burlington, Ont.) finished in fifth spot with a time of 9:37.39.
