Marauders look to continue cross country success in Waterloo

HAMILTON, Ont. - After a near perfect performance in the season-opening meet last weekend, the McMaster Marauders will look to continue to build on that success this Saturday in Waterloo.

The Waterloo Open may be only the second cross country event of the 2022 season but with the OUA Championships just one month away, the maroon and grey will look to trend upwards in the coming weeks.

After a first place finish by Max Turek (Whitby, Ont.) last weekend in London that propelled the team to a first place finish, the men from McMaster will have a target on their backs this weekend. The team will be challenged by last weekend's silver medalists, the Western Mustangs, but if the Marauders perform as they did last weekend, they should rise to the top once again. With eight fifth-years and graduate students on the McMaster roster, the maroon and grey have the experience and skill needed to run the table this season.

On the women's side, the Marauders will look to finish on the podium for the second straight week as a team. Hannah Goodjohn (Mount Albert, Ont.), McMaster's top finisher from last weekend, was edged by two Laval Rouge et Or last weekend and will look to be the top OUA finisher again this weekend. The Marauders and Gryphons will be neck and neck this season as both try to become 2022 OUA Champions but the maroon and grey may edge out the defending champions if they can perform as they did last weekend.

Last Time Out

Max Turek (Whitby, Ont.) was named the U SPORTS Cross Country Athlete of the Week on Wednesday. Turek, a fifth-year from Whitby, Ontario, recorded the best time of the day by a varsity athlete at last weekend's season opening meet in London, Ontario. The mechatronics engineering and management student crossed the 8-km finish line in 24:34 and averaged three minutes and five seconds per kilometre. Turek set a meet and a course record at the 47th Western Invitational, besting the 2016 meet record by a full seven seconds. With his impressive performance, the veteran finished the race 18 seconds ahead of the next closest competitor and propelled McMaster to top spot in the men's team event.
