LONDON, Ont. - The McMaster Marauders track team opened the 2022-23 season both north and south of the border this past weekend.

Sam Nusselder (Port Elgin, Ont.) and
Andrew Davies (Sarnia, Ont.) ventured south of the border to compete at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener in Boston, Mass., hosted by the Boston University Terriers. The Marauders had a great showing on what is one of the fastest tracks in North America. Goodjohn and Turek had two of the weekend's highlights for the maroon and grey, both of which were record breaking.
A fourth-year life sciences student from Mount Albert, Ont.,
Hannah Goodjohn had a huge PB in the 3000m with a time of 9:33.36, breaking the previous McMaster school record in the process.
Max Turek, a fifth-year mechatronics and engineering student from Whitby, Ont., also had a record breaking performance in the 5000m race. With a time of 13:50.37, Turek set a new school record after breaking the previous one and became the first Marauder to automatically qualify for the 2023 U SPORTS Track and Field Championship to be hosted in Saskatoon, Sask. from March 9th to 11th.
North of the border, the Marauders competed at the Bob Vigars Season Opener in London, Ont. McMaster student-athletes ran in the 1500m and 3000m races along with members of the Waterloo Warriors, Guelph Gryphons, Toronto Varsity Blues, Laurier Golden Hawks, Western Mustangs and Brock Badgers.
In a small field in the women's 1500m, Ana Morariu (Kincardine, Ont.) finished first in a time of 5:02.67 ahead of her competitor from Waterloo. The maroon and grey were well-represented in the top half of the women's 3000m, with three Marauders in the top four. McMaster was led by veteran runner, Hope Harnack (Cambridge, Ont.) who crossed the finish line in 10:05.45, good for second place. Harnack was chased by teammates Olivia MacAskill (Kanata, Ont.) and Emma Elliott (Gueloh, Ont.) who finished third and fourth, respectively,
On the men's side, Henry Gage (Toronto, Ont.) and Gustav Finley (Peterborough, Ont.) landed on the 1500m podium for the Marauders, in second and third spot, respectively. The two McMaster runners finished within one second of each other, just six seconds off of the winning time. A second-year integrated science student, Giancarlo Farruggia (Hamilton, Ont.) was the fastest finisher for the Marauders in the men's 3000m. With a time of 8:46.79, Farruggia completed the race in sixth spot, just four seconds off the podium. Tynan Webb (Barrie, Ont.) and Jason Lowrie (Kitchener, Ont.) rounded out the top ten finishes in the 3000m for the maroon and grey.

The Marauders will next compete at the Can Am Classic in Windsor on Friday January 13th to open the 2023 calendar year.
