On April 21, Danny Demyanenko of the Marauder men's volleyball team received the Ontario Volleyball Association's Scarborough Solars Award, a financial award that recognizes one male and one female athlete's contributions at the provincial or national level.
The first-year Marauder enjoyed a decorated rookie season this year, being honoured with OUA and CIS Rookie of the Year awards and named an OUA First-Team All Star, OUA and CIS All-Rookie Team member, and a CIS Second-Team All Canadian. Demyanenko grew into a starting role as the Marauders advanced to the CIS final and claimed a program-best silver medal on the national stage.
The OVA award recognizes Demyaneko's continued involvement with the Ontario provincial program and the national junior setup. The middle hitter led Team Ontario to victory at the National Team Challenge Cup in 2012, before serving as a member of the Canadian Junior National Team that advanced to a regional final (NORCECA) and will compete at the World Junior Championships in Turkey in August.
Marauder head coach Dave Preston lauded Demyanenko not only for his on-court success, but for his character as well.
"Although his on-court successes are remarkable, what continues to impress even more is his outstanding character and his ability to relate, communicate and connect with his teammates and coaches," said Preston. "Danny is a tremendous ambassador for his sport, his school and his country."
