HAMILTON, Ont. – McMaster men's volleyball saw three student-athletes recognized with major OUA honours, highlighted by
Mekhi Fitzgerald's Rookie of the Year selection alongside awards for
Matthew Rugosi and
Matthias Cooper.
Mekhi Fitzgerald (Milton, Ont.) – Rookie of the Year, All Rookie Team, Third Team All-Star
Mekhi Fitzgerald made a standout debut season for McMaster men's volleyball, earning Rookie of the Year, All-Rookie Team, and Third Team All-Star honours. He appeared in 19 matches, recording 188 kills (2.61 per set) on 485 attacks with a .237 hitting percentage, ranking among the league's top rookies in offensive production. Fitzgerald contributed 227.5 total points (3.2 per set), along with 74 digs, 27 total blocks (0.38 per set), 19 service aces (0.26 per set), and 14 assists, demonstrating an all-around game that impacted offense, defense, and serving. He started 16 matches, showing immediate reliability and adaptability in high-pressure situations. With his combination of scoring ability, serving threat, and defensive contributions, Fitzgerald quickly established himself as a cornerstone of the Marauders' lineup and a rising talent in the OUA.
Matthew Rugosi (Toronto, Ont.) – Third Team All Star
Matthew Rugosi anchored the Marauders defensively throughout the 2025–26 season, appearing in 20 matches and 76 sets. He recorded 225 digs, setting a new McMaster single-season record and becoming the all-time program leader for digs. Rugosi led the OUA with 2.96 digs per set, establishing himself as one of the conference's premier defensive specialists. He also contributed 58 assists (0.76 per set) adding 348 receptions. His consistency and composure in the backcourt provided stability for the Marauders in high-pressure moments, earning him OUA Third Team All-Star recognition. With elite defensive numbers and record-breaking achievements Rugosi proved to be a stand out defender this season.
Matthias Cooper (Hamilton, Ont.) – All Rookie Team
Matthias Cooper had an impressive debut season for McMaster men's volleyball, earning recognition on the OUA All-Rookie Team. He appeared in 19 matches and 64 sets, recording 121 kills (1.89 per set) on 361 attacks with a .199 hitting percentage. Cooper contributed 142 total points (2.2 per set), demonstrating his scoring ability and reliability in the rotation. He also added 67 digs, 14 total blocks, 11 assists, and 12 service aces, showcasing a well-rounded game as a first-year player. Cooper started 12 matches, providing versatility and steady performance across multiple positions. His consistent contributions on both offense and defense established him as a key component of the Marauders' lineup with a bright future ahead in the OUA.
