HAMILTON, Ont. —The McMaster Marauders men's volleyball team begins their regular season and at home on October 25th against the Toronto Varsity Blues.
After missing the playoffs for the first time in seems like forever, the Marauders men's volleyball team looks to bounce back. This team should feel and look a lot different from last season as a lot of new players have entered the mix. The team is currently one of the youngest in the conference with only three total players in either fourth or fifth year of their eligibility. Expect to see a lot of new faces this season as the Marauders look to return to the U SPORTS National Championship.
Marauders Head Coach,
Brad Douwes, is excited to get back into action with his young core. Douwes says, "Coming into this year, we've got high hopes. We've got goals to get the program back to where we'd like it to be. Competing for OUA championships, competing for U SPORTS championships on a regular basis. The team is very different from how it was last year, but we're really excited about where we are."
Key Players
Matthew Rugosi (Toronto, Ont.), Libero
Rugosi last season was named a third team all-star by the OUA, with 207 digs and 39 assists for the Marauders. Going into his fifth and final season, he looks to finish his career off on a high note.
Ronan Huth (Edmonton, Alta.), Setter
After sitting out last year due to transferring from the University of Alberta, Huth will start for the Marauders this season. Huth has won a Canada West Championship in 2023 and looks to bring home an OUA one as well.
Mekhi Fitzgerald (Milton, Ont.) Setter
Although just a rookie, Fitzgerald has made a name for himself in training camp and exhibition this fall. Expect him to get minutes to start the the season and his U SPORTS career.
Coach Douwes is excited for the future of his program and the legacy of McMaster Volleyball, saying, "…To compete at nationals again would be amazing for our young core. To get to compete at nationals and see what that's all about is really important. Knowing that in 27, 28, and 29, we're going to be highly competitive and we're going to be going after national championships."
Their first game is set to take place this Saturday, October 25 and 2 PM in the Burridge Gymnasium.
