Ted Goveia leaves lasting legacy with creation of McMaster Football Scholarship

Late Tiger-Cats General Manager and former Marauder coach remembered for his contributions to football and support of student-athletes

HAMILTON – McMaster University joins the Canadian football community in mourning the passing of Ted Goveia, General Manager of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and a proud member of the Marauder football family.

Before his passing, Goveia worked with McMaster to establish a scholarship that will continue his legacy of supporting student-athletes. The Ted Goveia Football Scholarship will provide financial assistance to a returning offensive or defensive lineman who demonstrates leadership, resilience, and the spirit of a true Marauder; qualities that defined Goveia throughout his career.

With more than 30 years in the game, Goveia was a respected leader and mentor from coast to coast. He began his coaching career in 1994 at his alma mater, Mount Allison, and went on to serve at several institutions and in the Canadian Football League, capturing three Grey Cup championships along the way with the Toronto Argonauts and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Born in Burlington, Ontario, Goveia's ties to the GTHA ran deep. He dedicated time and energy to the Burlington Braves, McMaster Marauders, and, most recently landed his dream job with his hometown Tiger-Cats as GM. In the early 2000s, he served on McMaster's coaching staff, helping guide the Marauders to three Yates Cup championships and leaving a lasting impact on countless student-athletes.

"Ted has given so much to the game of football—here at McMaster, throughout Hamilton, and across the country. His influence has touched countless Marauder football student-athletes, and his contributions to the sport will continue to inspire long into the future," said Keenan Jeppesen, McMaster's Director of Athletics & Recreation. "We are grateful for all of Ted's contributions to Marauder football past, present and future."

In April, Goveia shared he had been diagnosed with esophageal cancer, a battle he faced with characteristic strength and optimism. The outpouring of support for "Team Ted" reflected the deep respect and admiration he earned across the football community.

Through his generosity, optimism, and love for the game, Ted Goveia will forever be remembered as a legendary figure in McMaster, Hamilton, and Canadian football. The scholarship that bears his name will ensure that his passion for developing student-athlete leaders endures for generations to come.
