TORONTO, Ont. - The McMaster women's lacrosse team closed out the 2022 season in Toronto this past weekend at the OUA Championship. The Marauders faced the host, Toronto Varsity Blues, and the Queen's Gaels, both of which the maroon and grey had matched-up with previously this season.
Game 1 vs Toronto Varsity Blues
Playing the final game of the opening day of the 2022 OUA Championship, the McMaster Marauders faced the Toronto Varsity Blues at their home stadium on Friday night. The host jumped out to an early lead, making the score 4-0 after the opening quarter and continued to find the back of the net to start the second quarter. Late in the opening half,
Annika Perrino (Burlington, Ont.) got the Marauders on the board to make the score 9-1 in favour of the Varsity Blues at the break.
The third quarter showcased each team's defence as neither McMaster or Toronto was able to muster much in terms of offence. The Varsity Blues added a goal at the midpoint of the quarter but the Marauders responded with a goal from Kierra McDougall (London, Ont.).
Unfortunately, those were the only two shots to find their way past the Varsity Blues' goalie and Toronto recorded a 15-2 victory.
Game 2 vs Queen's Gaels
McMaster was back in action on Saturday afternoon for the second of its two round robin contests. With a semi-final berth on the line, the Queen's Gaels came out of the gates strong, going up by seven after just the first quarter. McDougall scored for the Marauders in the second to trail 10-1 at the half.
Queen's would continue the attack with four third quarter goals and five more in the fourth. McDougall would go on to score her second of the game early in the fourth quarter but that's as close as the Marauders would get. The Gaels secured the win with a 19-2 scoreline and ended the Marauders Championship in the process.
Queen's beat Trent 16-5 in the OUA Championship gold medal game on Sunday to earn the Patterson Cup and OUA title.
Despite the weekend's outcome, the Marauders are making strides and with some quality Championship experience under their belt, will now look to the 2023 season.
