Hamilton, Ont. - The McMaster women's lacrosse team continued their season with much success as they hosted OUA teams from across the province over the weekend, and took on the Brock Badgers on Wednesday night.
In a rescheduled game, the Badgers and the Marauders battled on Alumni Field. Aggressive defence forced many turnovers and created scoring opportunities in Brock's end. The McMaster defence was also about to shut down the Brock offence on a number of occasions, holding them to just three goals.
The home team scored 10 of their own, earning them their sixth win of the season. Goal scorers for McMaster included Kyra Reilly (Grimsby, Ont.), Lindsay Hamilton (Mississauga, Ont.) and Stephanie Ball (Brampton, Ont.) with two each, and Jackie Heaton (Peterborough, Ont.), Chantelle Carnegie (Kingston, Ont.) and Steph Sullivan (Bethany, Ont.) all scoring one each.
On Saturday, October 6, the Marauders began their weekend matches with a huge win over the Queen's Gaels. Defeating Queen's for the first time in school history, McMaster scored eight goals and held the Gaels to just three.
"We won the ground ball war and out hustled the Gaels, which was so key," said head coach Silvana Yee. "There was phenomenal play from both ends of the field and we had outstanding goaltending from rookie Christina McCauley."
Goal scorers from McMaster included Heaton with the hat trick, Carnegie, Hamilton, Reilly and Erica Crowder (Whitby, Ont.).
The York Lions were the Marauders' second match-up of the day. They ended the weekend with a 2-0 record with a scrappy battle against a young York squad. Winning the game 10-8, Ruby Gatt (Avondale, PA) scored four, Hamilton got the hat trick, Heaton scored two more and Ball rounded it out with one of her own.
McMaster finishes off the regular season with games against the Guelph Gryphons and the Western Mustangs on October 14.
