Hamilton, Ont. - The McMaster women's lacrosse team hosted the Western Mustangs and the Laurier Golden Hawks today on Almuni Field.
Laurier, the defending OUA Champions, were the first to get on the board and the two teams would trade goals twice to be tied at 2-2. Ruby Gatt (Avondale, PA) and Jackie Heaton (Peterborough, Ont.) were the first two goal scorers for the Marauders. McMaster would than go up 4-2 with goals from Kyra Reilly (Grimsby, Ont.) and Stephanie Ball (Brampton, Ont.) before Laurier tied it up at four all. The go-ahead goal came from Heaton to end the half 5-4 in favour of the Marauders.
The beginning of the second half saw the Hawks score three before McMaster's Chantelle Carnegie (Kingston, Ont.) responded with a goal of her own. Lindsay Hamilton (Mississauga, Ont.) also scored for the Marauders to tie it up at 7-7.
After the score was tied up, Laurier scored with 13 minutes to go, then Sarah Kumka () tied it up again for the Marauders at 8-8. Laurier took the lead again with another goal before Heaton took the ball in on her own and scored for the Marauders with two minutes to go. With 44 seconds left on the clock the Hawks would put the game away and out of reach for the Marauders.
"That is how lacrosse is really played," said head coach Silvana Yee. The head coach of the McMaster lacrosse team gushed, "That's the best they've played all year, what a game."
The Marauders played the best team in the league earlier on Sunday, but were taken down 14-3.
Down 4-1 at half, the Marauders were unable to get past the tough Western defence. Goal scorers for McMaster were Heaton, Hamilton and Julie Marquardt (Whitby, Ont.).
