HAMILTON, Ont. – A new season and a renewed identity await the McMaster Marauders men's soccer team as they prepare to kick off their 2026 campaign Friday night at Ron Joyce Stadium.

McMaster enters the season looking to build off a 2025 campaign that saw the Marauders finish 3-3-6 during the OUA regular season before advancing to the OUA quarterfinals.

The Marauders played in tight contests throughout much of last season. Six of McMaster's 12 regular-season matches ended in draws, including five of six games away from home. The Marauders scored 18 goals while allowing 16, finishing the year with three shutouts and a 1.34 goals-against average.

McMaster showed flashes of what it was capable of throughout the campaign. The Marauders earned a 2-0 victory over Western before defeating Guelph 3-1 on the road two days later. Later in September, McMaster shut out Laurier 3-0 as part of a stretch of five consecutive matches without a loss.

That season continued into the OUA postseason.

McMaster travelled to Guelph for its opening playoff match and came away with a 1-0 victory, keeping a clean sheet to advance to the OUA quarterfinals. The Marauders then travelled to York, where their season came to an end in a narrow 3-2 defeat.

Now, the focus turns to finding greater consistency in 2026.

Head coach Tristan Joyce, a former Marauders goalkeeper from 2017 to 2021, has emphasized reconnecting his group with the identity of McMaster soccer throughout training camp.

"The biggest focus has been getting back to what our culture is at McMaster soccer," Joyce said. "We want to get back to that grit of what it means to play for a team in Hamilton."

The Marauders have brought alumni back around the program throughout the preseason, giving former players opportunities to interact with the current roster and attend training sessions and games. Joyce hopes those connections will give his players a greater understanding of the culture that has been built within the program.

With an experienced group of returners alongside a collection of young talent, Joyce believes the Marauders have the balance needed to take another step this season.

New Faces Ready to Make an Impact

McMaster welcomes eight newcomers to the program in 2026, adding another wave of young talent to the roster.

Among that group, Fontecha and Dushyanthan have stood out throughout training camp and are expected to have opportunities to make an immediate impact.

Fontecha arrives at McMaster following a strong 2025 season in which he recorded two goals and two assists on his way to earning OUA Second Team All-Star honours. Dushyanthan has impressed on the back line throughout camp and has quickly adapted to the team's culture.

With several players preparing for their first OUA minutes, Joyce has placed an emphasis on how his group responds when things do not go its way.

"Reaction to everything, a bad call, a missed chance, etc. It's always shoulders back, chest and head up for me," Joyce said. "Always on to the next action."

The mindset is about eliminating negative reactions and remaining focused on the next moment. Joyce will rely on his returning players to help establish that standard as younger members of the roster adjust to OUA competition.

Players to Watch

Ethan Cagalj

Captain Ethan Cagalj (Stoney Creek, Ont.) will once again provide experience at the back for the Marauders.

Cagalj started all 12 regular-season matches in goal last season, playing more than 1,074 minutes while recording three shutouts. He finished the campaign with a 1.34 goals-against average and 39 saves.

The two-time OUA All-Star and OUA champion has played four seasons with the Marauders and will be relied upon to help lead a group featuring several players preparing for their first significant OUA minutes.

Damiano Refosco

Alongside Cagalj will be fifth-year defender Damiano Refosco (Hamilton, Ont.).

Refosco started all 11 regular-season matches he appeared in during 2025, recording an assist and six shots, with four reaching the target. He also started both of McMaster's OUA postseason matches.
His experience and consistency will be important for a Marauders defensive unit looking to build on a season in which McMaster allowed just 16 goals in 12 regular-season matches.

Cristian Alfieri

Fifth-year forward Cristian Alfieri (Milton, Ont.) gives McMaster another veteran presence.

Alfieri appeared in 10 regular-season matches in 2025 before making an impact during McMaster's postseason run. He recorded a goal and an assist across the Marauders' two playoff contests.

Alongside Cagalj and Refosco, Alfieri will be counted on to provide leadership and stability throughout the season.

"They're players that understand the moments of the game and how the league works, raise their level and hold people accountable," Joyce said.

Carl Masrajian

Another player to watch is third-year midfielder Carl Masrajian (Abu Dhabi, UAE).

After seeing limited OUA action through his first two seasons, Masrajian has impressed throughout training camp and is expected to compete for a larger role in 2026.

Joyce has been encouraged by Masrajian's preseason and believes the midfielder is capable of making a significant jump this season.

A New Season Begins

For the Marauders, 2026 represents an opportunity to turn the narrow margins of last season in their favour.

Last year's group demonstrated its ability to compete throughout the OUA West, with half of its regular-season matches ending in draws before McMaster earned a postseason victory on the road at Guelph.

Now, with an experienced leadership group, eight newcomers and a renewed emphasis on the program's identity, the Marauders will look to take the next step.

For Joyce, there is no better setting to begin that journey than Ron Joyce Stadium.

"It's going to be the most fun event on campus; it's the best sport on the best night out," Joyce said. "Friday at Ron Joyce Stadium under the lights, there's no better experience."

The first test comes Friday night.
