No. 3 McMaster set for OUA Semifinal showdown with No. 1 TMU

Marauders and Bold meet in Toronto after dramatic quarterfinal shootout victories with a championship berth on the line

HAMILTON, Ont. — The McMaster Marauders men's soccer team continues its postseason journey Saturday evening as the No. 3 seed Marauders travel to Toronto to face the No. 1 seed TMU Bold in the OUA Semifinals. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Downsview Park, with the winner advancing to the OUA Championship on November 7.

McMaster enters the semifinals following a dramatic 4-3 penalty shootout victory over Western after the teams battled to a 1-1 draw through 120 minutes.

The Marauders have earned consecutive postseason victories, opening their playoff campaign with a 3-0 win over Brock before overcoming Western on the road.

TMU also needed penalties to advance, defeating Carleton in a shootout following a 1-1 draw through extra time.

McMaster finished third in the OUA West Division with a 6-3-3 record and 21 points, while TMU claimed the East Division's top seed with a 7-2-3 record and 24 points.

Road to the Semifinals: McMaster

McMaster opened its postseason on October 21 with a commanding 3-0 victory over the Brock Badgers at Ron Joyce Stadium.

Damiano Refosco (Hamilton, Ont.) opened the scoring in the 29th minute, converting a penalty kick after Brock defender Nicholas Buccianti was shown a red card.

The Marauders doubled their advantage in the 65th minute when AJ Robichaud (Oakville, Ont.) finished an opportunity created by Refosco.

Cristian Alfieri (Milton, Ont.) completed the scoring in the 73rd minute following a pass from Niko Eskit (Oakville, Ont.).

McMaster outshot Brock 9-1 while goalkeeper Ethan Cagalj (Stoney Creek, Ont.) recorded the clean sheet.

The victory set up a quarterfinal meeting with Western on October 24 in London.

The teams battled through a scoreless opening 90 minutes before Western broke the deadlock in the 109th minute when Stefano Pelliccioni converted a penalty kick.

Trailing 1-0 with time running out, McMaster responded in the 116th minute when Robichaud scored an unassisted equalizer, forcing the contest into a penalty shootout.

Refosco, Brayden Truong, Tiago Palhetas and Alfieri converted their attempts for McMaster.

With Western needing to score on its final penalty to extend the shootout, Cagalj denied Ennis Bernaus to secure a 4-3 victory and send the Marauders into the semifinals.

Cagalj finished with eight saves as Western outshot McMaster 18-9 and held a 14-11 advantage in corner kicks.

McMaster: No. 3 West Seed (6-3-3)

McMaster enters Saturday's semifinal having demonstrated both offensive balance and defensive resilience throughout its postseason run.

Robichaud has been one of the Marauders' most important attacking contributors, scoring in both playoff matches.

The forward led McMaster with four goals during the regular season, including two game-winners, before continuing that production against Brock and Western.

Alfieri has also played an important role, scoring against Brock before converting McMaster's final penalty against Western. The fifth-year forward finished the regular season with three goals.

Refosco recorded a goal and an assist against Brock before converting McMaster's opening penalty in the quarterfinal shootout.

Karl Espiro (Mississauga, Ont.) led the Marauders with six regular-season points, recording one goal and five assists.

Eskit contributed two goals and two assists, while Nicolas Fontecha (Windsor, Ont.), Nathan Oduol (Oakville, Ont.) and Refosco each recorded two goals.

As a team, McMaster scored 17 goals during the regular season while generating 157 shots, averaging 13.1 attempts per contest.

Defensively, the Marauders conceded just 13 goals across 12 matches, ranking sixth in the OUA in goals allowed.

Cagalj appeared in 11 regular-season matches, recording 60 saves, an .833 save percentage and four shutouts.

The fifth-year goalkeeper has continued that form into the postseason, recording a clean sheet against Brock before delivering eight saves and the decisive shootout stop against Western.

TMU: No. 1 East Seed (7-2-3)

TMU enters Saturday's semifinal after finishing first in the OUA East Division with a 7-2-3 record and 24 points, one point ahead of Ontario Tech.

The Bold earned an automatic berth into the quarterfinals, where they faced Carleton on October 24 at Downsview Park.

Carleton took the lead in the 63rd minute when Anthony Nonez found the back of the net.

With TMU facing elimination, Aidan Hugo converted a penalty kick in second-half stoppage time, bringing the Bold level at 1-1 and forcing extra time.

Neither side found a winner during the additional 30 minutes, sending the quarterfinal to penalties.

Goalkeeper Dante Ferraro emerged as the difference-maker, producing multiple shootout saves, including the decisive stop on Carleton's final attempt.

Exosse Kadiebue and Alexander Santillan converted during the later stages of the shootout, setting up Ferraro's game-winning save.

The Bold scored 23 goals during the regular season, averaging 1.92 per match while recording 114 shots.

TMU finished with a .202 shooting percentage, demonstrating its ability to capitalize on scoring opportunities.

Taha Ilyass led the Bold with six regular-season goals in 11 appearances, while Kadiebue added four goals in 10 matches.

Luc Ihama and Hugo each contributed two goals, providing TMU with additional attacking options.

Defensively, TMU conceded just 11 goals during the regular season, the third-fewest in the OUA.

Ferraro appeared in nine regular-season matches, recording 24 saves, a .750 save percentage and six victories.

Key Factors

Playoff Momentum: McMaster enters Saturday's matchup following consecutive victories over Brock and Western. Robichaud has scored in both postseason contests, while Alfieri and Refosco have also made important contributions.

Goalkeeping Battle: Both teams advanced from their quarterfinals thanks to decisive performances from their goalkeepers. Cagalj recorded eight saves against Western before stopping the Mustangs' final penalty, while Ferraro delivered multiple shootout saves against Carleton.

Containing TMU's Attack: Ilyass and Kadiebue combined for 10 of TMU's 23 regular-season goals. Limiting their opportunities will be important against a Bold team that averaged nearly two goals per contest.

Capitalizing on Opportunities: McMaster averaged 13.1 shots per match during the regular season compared to TMU's 9.5. However, the Bold finished with a .202 shooting percentage compared to McMaster's .108.

Experience Under Pressure: Both programs survived quarterfinal matches that required 120 minutes and penalty shootouts. Composure and execution in another elimination contest could determine which team advances.

An OUA Championship Berth on the Line

Saturday's semifinal represents an opportunity for McMaster to move one step closer to capturing the OUA title.

The Marauders have already overcome two postseason opponents, including a Western team that finished ahead of them in the regular-season standings.

With Robichaud scoring in consecutive playoff matches, Refosco contributing at both ends of the field and Cagalj providing a reliable presence between the posts, McMaster enters Saturday's contest with confidence.

TMU, meanwhile, will look to build on its East Division title and capitalize on home-field advantage after advancing past Carleton in a dramatic shootout.

The winner will advance to the OUA Championship on November 7, with an opportunity to compete for the conference title.
