Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Aaron Hilson

McMaster's OUA Championship hopes end with narrow semifinal loss to TMU

Despite outshooting the Bold 13-7 and controlling much of the attacking play, the Marauders fall 1-0 in Toronto to conclude their OUA playoff run.

TORONTO, Ont. — The McMaster Marauders men's soccer team's pursuit of an OUA Championship came to an end Saturday evening, falling 1-0 to the TMU Bold in a tightly contested semifinal matchup at Downsview Park.

Despite controlling much of the offensive play and generating several opportunities throughout the match, the Marauders were unable to overcome an early deficit, bringing their postseason run to a close just one victory short of the OUA Championship final.

McMaster finished with a 13-7 advantage in shots and a 7-2 edge in corner kicks, but an early goal from TMU's Exosse Kadiebue proved to be the difference.

The Bold wasted little time establishing the lead, opening the scoring just 3:32 into the contest. Kadiebue found the back of the net for his fifth goal of the season, putting the hosts ahead 1-0.

Despite the early setback, McMaster responded with sustained attacking pressure, creating several opportunities to level the score throughout the opening half.

Karl Espiro (Mississauga, Ont.) led the Marauders' offensive efforts, registering six shots, including two on target. The forward tested TMU goalkeeper Dante Ferraro in the 19th minute before forcing another save in the 40th.

McMaster continued to threaten late in the opening half, with Brayden Truong (Coquitlam, B.C.) directing a header on goal moments after Espiro's second effort. Ferraro was again equal to the challenge, preserving the Bold's narrow advantage.

The Marauders entered halftime trailing 1-0 despite holding an 8-2 advantage in shots and generating five corner kicks.

TMU nearly doubled its lead early in the second half when Ivan Nechyporuk struck the crossbar in the 48th minute, providing another reminder of the hosts' attacking threat.

McMaster continued searching for an equalizer as the second half progressed, with Espiro sending an attempt wide in the 60th minute.

Head coach Tristan Joyce turned to his bench in the 69th minute, introducing Cristian Alfieri (Milton, Ont.) as the Marauders pushed additional numbers forward in pursuit of a breakthrough.

AJ Robichaud (Oakville, Ont.), who scored McMaster's lone goal in the quarterfinal victory over Western, saw an attempt blocked in the 73rd minute. Nico Fontecha (Windsor, Ont.) followed with an effort that went wide shortly afterward.

With time running out, the Marauders continued pressing into the attacking third, but TMU's defensive organization made clear scoring opportunities difficult to find.

McMaster made additional substitutions in the closing minutes, bringing Nathan Oduol (Oakville, Ont.) and Leshawn Facey (Toronto, Ont.) into the contest as the visitors searched for a late equalizer.

Facey produced one final opportunity during second-half stoppage time, directing a shot on target, but Ferraro made the save to preserve the shutout.

McMaster goalkeeper Ethan Cagalj (Stoney Creek, Ont.) finished with one save, while Ferraro recorded four stops for TMU.

The result brought an end to an impressive postseason run for the Marauders, who entered the playoffs as the No. 3 seed in the OUA West.

McMaster opened its playoff campaign with a victory over Brock at Ron Joyce Stadium before travelling to London for a dramatic quarterfinal showdown against Western. After battling the Mustangs to a 1-1 draw through regulation and extra time, the Marauders advanced with a 4-3 penalty shootout victory.

Saturday's semifinal marked the conclusion of that journey, with McMaster falling narrowly despite holding the statistical advantage against the Bold.

While the result ends the Marauders' hopes of capturing the OUA title, their postseason performance highlighted the team's resilience and ability to compete in high-pressure elimination matches.

TMU advances to the OUA Championship final, while McMaster closes its 2026 playoff campaign following a hard-fought semifinal appearance.
