McMaster completes dramatic comeback to defeat Western in penalties, advances to OUA Semifinals

Robichaud's 115th-minute equalizer and Cagalj's outstanding performance lift Marauders past Mustangs in thrilling quarterfinal

LONDON, Ont. — With their season hanging in the balance and just five minutes remaining in extra time, the McMaster Marauders men's soccer team delivered another unforgettable postseason performance, defeating the Western Mustangs 4-3 in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw Saturday night at Mustangs Stadium.

Trailing after a 109th-minute penalty kick, the Marauders refused to let their season end. AJ Robichaud (Oakville, Ont.) found the equalizer in the 115th minute before McMaster converted four of its five attempts from the penalty spot to secure a place in the OUA Semifinals.

Fifth-year goalkeeper and captain Ethan Cagalj (Stoney Creek, Ont.) delivered an outstanding performance between the posts, recording eight saves across 120 minutes while helping McMaster withstand relentless Western pressure.

The victory sends the Marauders into the OUA semi-final, where they will travel to Toronto to face the No. 1 seed TMU Bold on Saturday, October 31, at 7 p.m. at Downsview Park.

The opening half saw both sides battle for control, with McMaster generating opportunities through set pieces while Western looked to establish its attacking rhythm.

Cagalj was called into action early, denying Gavin Goddard in the third minute before turning aside Stefano Pelliccioni's attempt in the 19th.

McMaster responded with pressure of its own, earning five first-half corner kicks. Karl Espiro (Mississauga, Ont.) registered the Marauders' first shot on target in the 38th minute, forcing Western goalkeeper Ben Choudhry into a save.

Despite opportunities at both ends, neither side found the breakthrough before halftime.

Western emerged from the break with renewed attacking intensity, controlling stretches of possession and testing McMaster's defensive organization.

The Mustangs nearly opened the scoring in the 64th minute when Callum Yuile struck the crossbar. Western continued pressing, forcing Cagalj into several important stops throughout the closing stages of regulation.

The Marauders goalkeeper was particularly impressive in the final 10 minutes, denying Yuile, Pelliccioni, Stefan Musta and Alex Henderson to keep the match scoreless.

Western finished regulation with a significant advantage in attacking opportunities, but McMaster's backline continued to hold firm.

With neither team able to break the deadlock through 90 minutes, the quarterfinal moved into extra time.

Western continued threatening, with Musta striking the crossbar in the 94th minute before Leshawn Facey (Toronto, Ont.) produced a crucial defensive save on Yuile's attempt just moments later.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 109th minute when Pelliccioni converted a penalty kick, giving the Mustangs a 1-0 advantage with time running out.

However, McMaster's response demonstrated the resilience that has defined its postseason run.

Rather than allowing the late setback to derail their hopes, the Marauders pushed forward in search of an equalizer.

Robichaud forced Choudhry into a save in the 114th minute before finding the breakthrough just moments later.

In the 115th minute, Robichaud found the back of the net, leveling the match at 1-1 and sending the McMaster bench into celebration.

For Robichaud, the goal was the result of maintaining his composure despite the mounting pressure.

"Before the goal I just kept keeping my mind cool, I was taking some deep breaths and I knew it was going to come," Robichaud said. "We had some chances, and then when I scored it was just relief."

For head coach Tristan Joyce, the response reflected the belief within his squad.

"Incredible. Storybook, first time in a long time that I wasn't worried after we've conceded in extra time," Joyce said. "Normally teams crumble with that, and looking on the field and seeing guys smiling, seeing guys picking each other up, we knew what was going to happen."

When asked what he told his players following Western's goal, Joyce credited their leadership and composure.

"That's the best part. I didn't have to tell them anything. They told themselves."

After 120 minutes could not separate the two sides, the quarterfinal was decided by penalties.

Damiano Refosco (Hamilton, Ont.) opened the shootout with a successful conversion before Western's Pelliccioni missed his attempt.

Brayden Truong (Coquitlam, B.C.) doubled McMaster's advantage, while Goddard answered for Western.

Following an unsuccessful attempt from Espiro, Musta brought the Mustangs level. Tiago Palhetas (Mississauga, Ont.) and Alan Monyard then exchanged successful conversions, leaving the shootout tied heading into the final round.

Cristian Alfieri (Milton, Ont.) stepped forward and converted McMaster's fifth attempt, placing the pressure on Western's Ennis Bernaus.

With the Marauders' season on the line, Cagalj rose to the occasion one final time, stopping Bernaus' attempt to seal a 4-3 shootout victory and send McMaster into the OUA Semifinals.

McMaster finished with nine shots, including five on target, while Western registered 18 shots and 14 corner kicks.

Despite the Mustangs' attacking advantage, Cagalj's performance and the Marauders' defensive resilience proved decisive.

Joyce praised his captain's leadership following another standout performance.

"He continues to just amaze," Joyce said. "He's leading, that's the biggest thing, he's leading as a captain."

With consecutive postseason victories over Brock and Western, McMaster now turns its attention to a semifinal showdown against top-seeded TMU.

The Marauders will travel to Downsview Park on Saturday, October 31, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. and a place in the OUA Championship on the line.

For Joyce and his squad, the quarterfinal triumph represents another step toward their ultimate objective.

"It's a quarterfinal win, it felt really good, but I want more, we want more," Joyce said. "Semi-final, final, that's what we're looking to get."

With momentum building and confidence growing, the Marauders will look to continue their postseason run against the Bold.
