McMaster earns best-ever 4th place finish at Canadian University/College Championship

KOMOKA, Ont. – The McMaster Marauders men's golf team came away from the Canadian University/College Championship with a best-ever finish, a fourth place ranking in the nation. 

Tuesday May 30th - Round 1

The Marauders ended Day 1 tied for third spot at FireRock Golf Club.
 
Shooting a collective seven-over-par, the Marauders were led by Nicolas Dessureault who finished -1 after 18 holes. Dessureault birdied four holes and eagled Hole 12.
 
Teammates Sam Coons and Patrick Maloney each shot one over while Matthew Martel ended the day with a +6. Kavith Ranchagoda had a challenging first day.
 
The Marauders trailed the Laval Rouge et Or (+1) and the Victoria Vikes (+2), who held the top two spots after the opening round. The UBC Thunderbirds sat tied with McMaster to round out the top four teams.
 
Dessureault - Day 1 - Canadian University/College Championship

Wednesday May 31st - Round 2

The McMaster Marauders men's golf team sat in fourth place in the standings after Day 2 at the Canadian University/College Championship in Komoka, Ont. with a cumulative +11 through two rounds.

On the second day of competition, the Marauders scored a collective four-over-par with Matthew Martel leading the maroon and grey. He shot a five-under 67, the best score of any player in the second round. Bettering his opening round by eleven strokes thanks to a bogey-free back nine, Martel sat just five off the pace of second position as he was +1 after 36 holes.
 
Teammate Nicolas Dessureault shot one-under while Sam Coons ended the day with a +2. Patrick Maloney finished with a six-over 78 and Kavith Ranchagoda recorded his first eagle of the tournament.

Canada West's Victoria Vikes (-3) and the RSEQ's Laval Rouge et Or (-3) sat tied atop the table after two rounds. The UBC Thunderbirds (+6) rounded out the teams ahead of the Marauders.
 
Martel - Day 2 - Canadian University/College Championship

Thursday June 1st - Round 3

On a very hot day in Komoka for Round 3, the Marauders returned to the course and secured a spot in the top 10, making the final day cut for the first time at the Canadian University/College Championship.

Collectively, the Marauders shot two-under-par with both Sam Coons and Nicolas Dessureault having the top individual performances for the Marauders during Round 3, each tallying a four-under-68. Coons birdied seven holes and wrapped up the round with a par on 18 for the third consecutive day. Dessureault went bogey-free through all 18 holes.
 
Patrick Maloney recorded two birdies on the front nine to finish the day with a two-over-74. Kavith Ranchagoda had his best day of the tournament, ending with a four-over-76 while teammate Matthew Martel closed out the round with a five-over-77.

Ten teams made the cut to secure a spot at the final day of competition. The Victoria Vikes (-4) sat atop the leaderboard, the Laval Rouge et Or (-3) were one stroke back in second and the UFV Cascades (-2) rounded out the top three. The UBC Thunderbirds ended the day in fourth. The Marauders sat in fifth position, six strokes behind the Thunderbirds, headed into the final day of the tournament.
 
Coons - Day 3 - Canadian University/College Championship

Friday June 2nd - Round 4

Day 4 of competition had its challenges as the unseasonably high temperatures impacted every participant. Patrick Maloney had his best day on the course and closed out his varsity career with a three-under-69 while graduating senior, Sam Coons, ended the day with an 73. Maloney birdied five holes while Coons recorded back-to-back birdies on 7 and 8. Matthew Martel and Nicolas Dessureault recorded a 75 and 76, respectively. Dessureault was the final Marauder to tee off and closed out the tournament with an impressive eagle on the par-4 18th and final hole. 
 
Maloney - Day 4 - Canadian University/College Championship

Dessureault, a senior from Oakville, and Coons, a fifth-year Ancaster local, had the best individual results for the Marauders, finishing even at the end of four rounds, sharing 9th place. Maloney ended tied for 19th and Martel ended the championship tied for 47th in the field.

The team's fourth place finish at the Canadian University/College Championship is the highest ranking ever achieved in program history and marks the end of a successful 2022-23 varsity season.
