AYLMER, Ont. - The McMaster figure skating team closed out the 2022-23 season at the East Elgin Community Complex earlier this week at the OUA Championship. The Marauders ended the event in fourth place, the maroon and grey's best finish of the season.
McMaster earned its first two medals on the opening day of competition.
Julia Hlacar and
Laura Vancer finished third in the Star 8-9 Dance, earning the bronze.
Lily Carbray,
Lily Li,
Catalina Costiuc and
Maddie Monson picked up the maroon and grey's second medal - another bronze - in the Pairs Fours. The Marauders just missed out on a podium spot in the Senior Similar Pair (
Abbey Lenardon and
Rian Cocchetto) and the Novice Short (
Maddie Monson), placing fourth in both events.
Other Day 1 McMaster finishes included 5th in the Star 10 Solo Dance, 6th in the Open Rhythm, 7th in the Star 10/Gold Solo Dance and 9th in the Star 10 Freeskate.
At the conclusion of the opening day of competition, the Marauders sat in 4th place in the team standings.
The following day, the Marauders secured a gold medal in the Open Men's competition.
Alistair Lam, the 2022 OUA Gold Medalist, had a podium topping performance to become a back-to-back OUA Champion. The McMaster synchro team placed 4th while both the maroon and grey's Intermediate Similar Pair and Star 10 Similar Dance finished in 5th. The Dance 4s closed out the competition in 6th.
McMaster ended the 2023 OUA Championship in 4th place in the team standings behind the host and OUA gold medalist, Weatern Mustangs, the second place Guelph Gryphons and the Toronto Varsity Blues, this year's bronze medalists.
With a young squad, the Marauders' future is bright and will now look towards the 2023-24 OUA figure skating season.
