Marauders close out season at 2023 OUA Men's Curling Championship

PETERBOROUGH, Ont. - The McMaster men's curling team closed out the 2022-23 season at the Peterborough Curling Club this weekend at the OUA Championship. The Marauders went 3-1 in the round robin to advance to the quarterfinals where the maroon and grey ultimately fell to the Queen's Gaels.

McMaster was grouped in Pool B with the Brock Badgers, Guelph Gryphons and Laurentian Voyageurs. Each team matched-up with Pool A in the round robin.

On Day 1 of the competition, McMaster faced the Western Mustangs in the first contest of the Championship. A match that was all maroon and grey, the Marauders coasted to a 10-4 victory. The Toronto Varsity Blues were the day's next competitors. The Varsity Blues had the hammer in the opening end but it was the maroon and grey who scored first. From there, Toronto picked up the pressure to make the score 3-1 through four ends. The Marauders responded with two in the fifth to tie it up, but the Varsity Blues then scored twice more to make it 5-3 with one end remaining. McMaster scored two in the eighth to draw even before wrapping up the comeback win in an extra end, pushing their record to 2-0 through two draws.

Van Veghel - OUA Championship

The following day, the Marauders faced the reigning OUA Champion Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks. The 2022 gold medalists continued their impressive run with an 8-1 win over McMaster. The Marauders then upended the York Lions 7-3 to close out group play with a 3-1 record. The maroon and grey secured a spot in the quarterfinal later that day and would meet the Queen's Gaels. After two impressive days on the ice, it was the Gaels that came out on top 9-2, ending McMaster's Championship run.

With a young squad, the Marauders' future is bright and will now look towards the 2023-24 OUA curling season.
