The Marauders finished their season in Ottawa this weekend with a strong fourth-place finish at the OUA Men's Waterpolo Championships. The team was led on offense by Jack Sardo with six goals, while Colin Colterjohn supported with five goals and Leo Paplazarou scored four goals.
The No. 4 McMaster Marauders went into their first game on Friday night against the No. 5 Carleton Ravens, looking to come out with a win. The Ravens came into the first period with a strong start, putting up the first goal and finding a quick 5-2 lead. Veteran Colterjohn got the Marauders on the board with their first goal in the first period. The Marauders were hungry to score in the second period and were successful in tying up the score at 7-7 going into the half time break. The teams continued to match each other's offense, tying the score up to the 11th goal and keeping intensity high. A final goal by McMaster's Paplazarou edged out the Ravens with three minutes left in the game, resulting in a score of 12-11 for McMaster.
After a strong performance on Friday night, the Marauders were set to face off against the No. 1 Toronto Varsity Blues, who have been the reigning champions for the past six years. Knowing they were up against tough competition, the Marauders tried to hold strong on their defense. The Varsity Blues were able to get 12 goals in the first half of the game, but not without a response from Kane Law who scored a goal for McMaster with 23 seconds left going into the half time break. Toronto was relentless in their offense, continuing to find the back of the Marauders' net. Ultimately, the Varsity Blues were able to win 29-1.
Coming off a tough loss, the Marauders were set to play against the No. 2 Queen's Gaels in the bronze medal match on Sunday. The Marauders were fast out of the gate with the first two goals of the game from Sardo and Colterjohn, but the Gaels responded with two goals to tie the score at 2-2 at the end of the first period. The teams remained close going into the half time break, leaving the score at 6-4 for Queen's, with McMaster's two goals coming from Colterjohn. The Marauders struggled to continue with their offense into the second half of the game, as Queen's began to take control and run up the score. Despite their best efforts, McMaster fell 14-5 to Queen's and finished fourth overall.
As the Marauders close out their 2023 season, they will look forward to next season as they gain experience and continue to improve their performance at the OUA Championships.
