PETERBOROUGH, Ont. - The McMaster Marauders women's rugby team traveled to Peterborough on Saturday afternoon with one thing in mind - opening the season with a victory over the Trent Excalibur.
In the first contest of the 2022 OUA season, the Marauders looked to extend their ten year 8-0 record against the Excalibur and did just that.
On Saturday, in what was a closely contended contest, McMaster secured their first victory of the year, defeating Trent by a score of 34-19.
The Marauders opened the scoring in the 14th minute with a try from
Lillian Wilson (Ajax, Ont.). Captain,
Katie McLeod (Richmond Hill, Ont.), added the convert. McLeod added to her tally minutes later on a successful penalty to make the score 10-0 in favour of McMaster. Trent scored a try of their own but
Vanessa Webb (Barrie, Ont.) returned the favour for the maroon and grey. The Excalibur added a try late in the half and made the conversion. At the half, the Marauders led 15-12.
Once back on the pitch, the home team secured the first points of the second half, taking a 19-15 lead in the 54th minute of the contest. From there, it was all Marauders. The visitors scored 19 unanswered points to close out the game, taking the contest 34-19.
The Marauders start the season 1-0 while the Excalibur goes 0-1.
