Marauder Football announces 2022 coaching staff

HAMILTON, Ont. - The McMaster Marauder football program has announced Head Coach Stefan Ptaszek's coaching staff for the 2022 season: Scott Brady (assistant head coach/defensive coordinator), John Parkes (offensive coordinator), Chris Hopkins (offensive line), Robert Underhill (special teams coordinator/defensive backs), Will Mulligan (defensive front seven coordinator/defensive line/video coordinator), Jamie Barresi (quarterbacks), Taylor MacIntyre (receivers), Jarred Jones (receivers), Mike Warner (fullbacks/tightends), Amanda Ruller (running backs), Matt Vonk (offensive line), Kelly Ireland (offensive line), Art Tolliver (defensive line/long snappers), Nick Lazar (linebackers), Mike Solanki (linebackers), Cartier Shields (defensive backs), Sidney Parkes (defensive quality control) and Dana Segin (kickers/punters). Joe Joncas will provide game support and takes point on regional recruiting. Rick Johnson and James Southward will be responsible for all equipment needs.

Sixteen of the team's coaches and staff are returning to the Marauders in the same or a similar role as 2021.
 
 

Offense:

John Parkes
 enters his fifth season with the Marauders and his first as the offensive coordinator. He was the team's recruiting coordinator and director of football operations in 2019 and served as assistant offensive coordinator in 2021. Parkes has twenty years of coaching experience. He has coached at several levels of minor and varsity football across the province. Parkes spent seven seasons on staff with the Peterborough Wolverines, and was the head coach of the senior varsity team for the last four of those.

Barresi enters his second season with the Marauders. A Hamilton local, Barresi began his coaching career with the Ottawa Gee-Gees from 1981-83. He then spent 20 seasons coaching in the NCAA at Penn State, the University of Florida, Wake Forest and Central Florida. As a coach in the CFL (Hamilton, B.C., Saskatchewan, Winnipeg and Edmonton), he appeared in three Grey Cups in nine seasons, including a win in 2006 with the Lions. Barresi returned to Ottawa as head coach in 2013, a post he held until 2020.

Hopkins, a new addition to the coaching staff, joins the Marauders as offensive line coach. Prior to arriving in Hamilton, Hopkins was the recruiting coordinator and running backs coach for the Carleton Ravens. With six years of coaching experience at Mount Allison of the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) conference, Hopkins brings a balanced perspective to the coaching staff.

Ireland enters his third season with the Marauders as offensive line coach. The Brantford local played his university football at Saint Mary's in Halifax where he was a captain of the team during his final two seasons. Ireland was drafted to the Montreal Alouettes in 1998 but decided to return to the Huskies to finish out his university football career. He was named an AUS All-Star at offensive guard in 2000. As a coach, Ireland has held positions with OVFL and U SPORTS programs over his career.

Jones joins the Marauders as receivers coach. A Scarborough local, Jones began his collegiate career at the University of Memphis as a two-sport (track and football) student-athlete before enrolling at McMaster in 2008. Jones was a receiver for the Marauders football team and studied at McMaster from 2008 to 2011. He now returns to the Marauders, this time on the sidelines.

MacIntyre enters her second season with the team as a receivers coach. A wide receiver and back-up quarterback at Parkside Collegiate Institute, MacIntyre was the first female to play on the school's men's football team. Following her playing career, MacIntyre made the transition to coaching when she became Parkside's wide receivers coach and has since held positions with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues and the Special Olympics. 

Ruller enters her second season at McMaster as the running backs coach. Joining the Marauders coaching staff in 2021, the Regina local has continued to expand her resume with stints at the Saskatchewan Roughriders and, most recently, the Seattle Seahawks. With a background as a competitive Olympic weightlifter, Ruller has built a career as a Sports Performance Coach training both CFL and U SPORTS players and previously worked with the University of Regina football program as the speed coach.

Vonk enters his fifth season with the Marauders as offensive line coach. Hailing from Burlington, Vonk played his university football with the Waterloo Warriors before being drafted by the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2013. The offensive lineman spent two and a half years with the Roughriders, making his professional debut in August 2014. In 2017, Vonk was traded to the Montreal Alouettes and has since made the transition to coaching.

Warner has been a staple on the Marauders' coaching staff for years and will be responsible for the fullbacks and tight ends this season. A standout on the offensive line for four years at Waterloo, Warner finished out his university football career at McMaster in 2010. A Hamilton local, Warner was drafted 32nd overall in the 2010 CFL Draft by the Toronto Argonauts. 
 

Defense:

Scott Brady enters his fifth season with the Marauders as defensive coordinator. Brady is the former head coach and defensive coordinator at Mount Allison University, where he won consecutive Loney Bowl titles as AUS champion in 2013 and 2014. During his tenure, the Mounties advanced to four straight Loney Bowls (2013-16) and achieved the first undefeated regular season in school history in 2014. In addition to his roles at the U SPORTS level, Brady has twice featured as a guest coach at a CFL training camp.

Lazar enters his fourth season on the Marauders staff. Lazar played for the CJFL Burlington Braves, the University of Guelph and capped off his playing career at McMaster. As a coach, he spent three years with the HFA Junior Varsity Program winning the 2018 OPFL Provincial Championship. From 2015 to 2016, Lazar served as a linebacker coach for the Hamilton Hurricanes, winning the 2016 Provincial title. In 2017, he was named Football Canada's Minor Football Coach of the Year. 

Mulligan enters his second season as the defensive front seven coordinator and third as video coordinator. This year, Mulligan will also coach the defensive line. The Fergus local played his university football at Mount Allison University.

Parkes joins the Marauders as defensive quality control coach. The Peterborough local attended the University of Waterloo where he was a member of the Warriors football team and has since founded the Kawartha/Peterborough Otters football program.

Shields enters his second season as defensive backs coach. A two-time Vanier Cup champion with the Saint Mary's Huskies in 2001 and 2002, Shields is now the Hamilton Football Association President. 

Solanki joins the Marauders as linebackers coach. He played at the high school level and has since turned to coaching. Solanki has coached numerous teams at a variety of levels including the Niagara Regional Minor Football Association, the Niagara Spears of the OVFL, the Burlington Stampeders of the OFC and was the head coach of the Team West Varsity Squad at the Ontario Prospect Challenge.

Tolliver continues to coach the defensive line and long snappers for the Marauders. A nose guard for Nicholls State (NCAA D1), Tolliver continued his playing career with the NFL's New Orleans Saints from 1981 to 1983 and the USFL's Jacksonville Bulls in 1988 and 1989. He concluded his playing days with Edmonton, Hamilton and Montreal in the Canadian Football League. Tolliver began his coaching career in Hamilton in 1998 and has continued to build his coaching resume since that time.
 

Special Teams:

Rob Underhill enters his ninth season with the Marauders. A former player for the Marauders, Underhill has coached at all levels, including the OPFL, OVFL and the OFC, serving as head coach of the Hamilton Hurricanes in 2014.Underhill was a defensive assistant with the Marauders from 2010-2012. The Hamilton local spent the 2013 season on staff at the University of Toronto, where he was defensive backs coach, but returned to Hamilton in 2014 and helped McMaster in its drive to the Vanier Cup. 

Segin enters his fifteenth season with the Marauders as kicking coach. A graduate of St. Mary's University in Halifax, Coach Segin spent two seasons in the CFL with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 2002-03. He then moved into coaching and spent eleven years with the Burlington Minor Football Association until 2009. From 2010-2014, Coach Segin worked with three-time All-Canadian kicker Tyler Crapigna, who had one of the most successful careers in CIS/U SPORTS history.

2022 OUA Football Season


The Marauders will open the 2022 OUA campaign on Saturday August 27th in Ottawa against the Carleton Ravens, before hosting the York Lions on Saturday September 3rd at Ron Joyce Stadium in Hamilton for their home opener. All eight of McMaster's regular season games will be broadcast live on OUA.tv free of charge.
