HAMILTON, Ont. - The Marauders women's rugby team fell to the Brock Badgers on Saturday afternoon at Ron Joyce Stadium in OUA quarterfinal action.
After facing off just last Friday, Brock and McMaster returned to the pitch for a rematch with big implications. The winner would earn a berth to the OUA semifinals while the loser's season would be over.
In a back and forth battle, the visiting Badgers came up on top, defeating the Marauders 23-17.
Brock opened the scoring on a penalty goal early in the first half but McMaster responded with a try to go up 5-3. The Badgers recorded another penalty goal to lead 6-5 at the half.
Needing a big second half to secure a victory, the Marauders came back onto the field with determination and scored two tries and added a convert before the 60th minute. The visitors added a try just minutes later to make the score 17-13 with 20 minutes to play, pushed for the lead, keeping it close. Brock responded and added two more tries in the closing minutes of the contest to take the game by a 23-17 final and advance to the next round of playoffs.
Osa Olaye (Mississauga, Ont.) recorded two tries during the contest for a total of five tries on the season while
Sophia Cornacchia (Richmond Hill, Ont.) added the other major for the Marauders. Captain,
Katie McLeod (Richmond Hill, Ont.), added a convert in her final game in the maroon and grey.
Despite the closely contested match-up, the loss closes out the Marauders' 2022 season and marks the final time the maroon and grey's seniors will step on the field to represent McMaster. With two OUA playoff appearances in as many seasons, the Marauders will now turn to preparations for the 2023 campaign. Brock will travel to Guelph for an OUA semifinal match-up with the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday October 22.
