CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW: MARAUDERS HEAD TO GUELPH IN SEARCH OF HARDWARE FOR 2020 OUA CHAMPIONSHIP

The McMaster Marauders wrestling teams have been on a tear as of late, as they head to Guelph, Ont. this weekend to take on the conference's best for the 2020 OUA Championships hosted by the Guelph Gryphons.

The championship will take place on Saturday, with OUA supremacy on the line. Last season the Marauder men finished second overall behind the Brock Badgers, while the women finished fifth.

A returning major award winner will be front and centre for the Marauders, who saw several of their wrestlers take home hardware in 2019. At the forefront of the maroon machine is Ameen Aghamirian (Kingston, Ont.), who after winning gold in the 82kg class, took home the OUA's Outstanding Male Wrestler award. The fifth-year standout began his campaign with a bronze medal at the McMaster Invitational, but will be looking to close out the OUA portion with a golden result.

First-year wrestler Connor Quinton enters the 68kg category, the rookie enters the championship on a high after claiming gold at the Western Open only a week ago. Francesco Fortino enters in the 57kg category after a successful season with multiple podium finishes – second at the Ryerson Invitational, and third at both the Brock Open, as well as the Ontario Juniors championship a week ago.

On the women's side, Joelle Vanderslagt has been a rising star all season and will enter the 67kg class this weekend. After finishing third at the Brock Open in the 63kg category, she followed the effort up with a silver medal performance last weekend at Western.

Also rocking Maroon is second-year wrestler Simi Jayeoba. The North York, Ont. native placed second at last year's Junior Nationals, and will look to make her mark on the OUA stage in the 63kg category.
