Men's Soccer: Marauders Suffer in Offensive Showcase, Lose 5-2 to Lions

York struck four times in a five-goal first half.

Box Score Thursday brought another installment in a long-held OUA soccer rivalry, but unfortunately for the Marauders, it was one they will want to quickly forget.

McMaster came out on the losing end of a wild, goal-filled encounter in North York, suffering their second defeat of 2017 in a 5-2 loss to the York Lions.

Yunus Mollayev and Anand Sergeant had goals for the Marauders (3-2-0) in the losing effort.

Most of Thursday's fireworks came in a five-goal first half which firmly put the visiting Marauders on the back foot.

Conceding inside the first three minutes, when Milan Beader slotted in for the first York tally, McMaster was fighting an uphill battle for the majority of the contest.

Christian Cavallini and Jonathan Lao added goals in the 21st and 25th minute to establish a comfortable three-goal cushion in the early going, before Mollayev gave the visitors a glimmer of hope by striking just over a minute later.

His inroads were erased in the 41st, when Dylan Carreiro gave the hosts their fourth breakthrough of the half, and his team carried a dominant 4-1 lead into the break.

Just over two minutes into the fresh half, Anand Sergeant found the back of the net to once again drag the Marauders within two, but any hope of a McMaster comeback was snuffed out in the 79th minute, when Cavallini scored his second of the night.

NEXT UP: The Marauders battle another divisional rival, the Guelph Gryphons, in a home contest at Ron Joyce Stadium on Sunday, September 10. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:15 p.m.
