Women's Rugby: No. 7 Marauders Fall 35-19 to No. 3 Gryphons to End Regular Season

Mac enters the OUA playoffs as the second seed, and enjoys a bye through the quarterfinals.

Two undefeated teams showed up to Ron Joyce Stadium Friday, but only one left that way.

The U SPORTS no. 3-ranked Guelph Gryphons beat the no. 7-ranked McMaster Marauders 35-19, completing a perfect 4-0 season and dealing Mac their first loss.

Brodie Schmidt and Madison Brattan each scored tries for the Gryphons, while Alexandra Everett scored two tries. But the star for Guelph was Julia Schell, who scored one try and five conversion kicks in total.

Khadijah Brouilette,  Maddie Cohoon and Britni French had tries for the Marauders.

First-half tries from Everett and Brattan saw Guelph take a 14-7 lead into the halftime break, with Brouilette crossing the try line for Mac.

Making things interesting in the late stages, Maddie Cohoon and Britni French both intercepted Guelph passes and broke away to score, with French and scoring a try with five minutes left in the game to make the score 28-19.

But Schell put the game beyond reach in the late stages, with a converted try to give Guelph a 16-point margin.

McMaster finishes the regular season as the second seed in the Shiels Division, and will enjoy a bye through the OUA quarterfinals.
