Women's Volleyball: Marauders Add Local Outside el Helou

The Westdale product will enroll in Health Sciences and suit up for Mac in 2018-19

Intriguing athleticism and a rock-solid academic resume combined to make Zoé el Helou an attractive prospect for the Marauders, and her delayed return to a volleyball court will see the local product arrive at McMaster at the perfect time.

Already accepted into the university's Health Sciences program, the outside hitter from nearby Westdale high school deferred her offer and will suit up for the Marauders in 2018-19, using the intervening time to rediscover her playing form overseas.

El Helou was playing club volleyball with the Halton Hurricanes and at the high-school level with Westdale, before a series of injury issues prevented her from playing for the past two seasons. Enter the opportunity for what McMaster head coach Tim Louks called a "volleyball exchange," which has seen el Helou travel to Austria to rehabilitate her game in a European academy setting.

"I'm extremely grateful for the opportunity to defer," said el Helou of her commitment. "It has allowed me to become confident on the court again. By allowing me to begin university being caught up to the level I wanted to play at, it will greatly benefit what I am able to bring to the team in the long term."

"I don't think you can script this any differently to be more beneficial for her, in terms of her recovery to the game and from a health perspective, as well as a cultural opportunity abroad," said Louks.

"I think it's a win-win."

A verbal commit to the McMaster program before she entered the 11th grade, el Helou was described by Louks as an athletic outside hitter in a small frame, one who has touched 10 feet with her approach in previous testing.

It's a physical package that may remind Marauders fans of another player: current Marauder and OUA all-star Joanna Jedrzejewska.

Replacing an athlete of her calibre - Jedrzejewska will graduate after this season - will be no small task, and el Helou projects to be one of several options Louks will boast on the left in 2018 and beyond.

"Tim's expectations for me are to become an aggressive outside hitter," said el Helou. "By having enough time to properly recover from my injuries, I should return in peak physical condition with a lot more experience under my belt."

How exactly el Helou fits into the Marauders roster on day one remains to be seen, but her return to court this year should give Louks and the McMaster staff a better look at her potential.

"When she arrives here, we'll be able to assess better what her immediate utility is, having knocked the rust off over the course of the year," said the Marauders coach.

In the classroom, el Helou's fit at McMaster is unquestioned, having already been accepted to Health Sciences as an outstanding student who boasted a nearly spotless academic average through her time at Westdale.

"The quality of the BHSc program was the primary factor in my decision to commit (to McMaster)," said el Helou. "When I verbally committed to Tim in the summer before Grade 11, I already knew I wanted to enroll in this program."

"Having known Tim for years, and being familiar with the great atmosphere of the University, I was very happy with my decision."
