Marauders finish season with OUA Silver Medal

McMaster pushes Badgers in four-set battle inside sold-out Bob Davis Gymnasium

St. Catharines, Ont. — The No. 3 McMaster Marauders battled the No. 1 Brock Badgers in the OUA Quigley Cup final Friday night at a sold-out Bob Davis Gymnasium, with Brock ultimately claiming the championship in four sets (25–20, 24–26, 25–23, 25–18).

Meeting in the conference final for the third straight season, the familiar rivals once again delivered a high-energy matchup with the OUA title and a national championship berth on the line. The atmosphere inside the packed gymnasium was electric from the opening serve, with a loud crowd creating a playoff intensity that matched the stakes of the championship.

Brock struck first in the opening set, using efficient attacking to build an early lead. The Badgers hit .400 in the frame and capitalized on several McMaster service errors to create separation midway through the set. The Marauders pushed back late behind Olivia Julien and Lucie Shaver, trimming the deficit to 20-18, but Brock closed strong to secure the opener 25-20.

McMaster responded with resilience in the second set. After falling behind early, the Marauders rallied behind a strong serving run from Eva Lin, who recorded back-to-back service aces to spark momentum. The teams traded points throughout a dramatic finish before McMaster edged Brock 26-24, highlighted by a key block from Shaver and Angelika Vidmar to even the match.

"I just wanted us to stabilize a little bit," said head coach Nathan Janzen. "My message was to stay aggressive and take care of the ball. It was such a cool environment; it was really loud in there, and sometimes it's hard to even get a message across. But I'm really proud of how our team responded."

The third set proved to be another tight battle. McMaster built a mid-set advantage behind strong attacking from Julien and Maddy Lutes, but Brock answered with a late run to take the set 25-23 and move within one set of the championship.

In the fourth, Brock's offense found another gear. Led by Daryan Chadwick and Madison Tuck, the Badgers steadily extended their lead and closed the match 25-18 to capture the Quigley Cup in front of the roaring home crowd.

Julien led the Marauders with 16 kills and 10 digs, while Shaver added 13 kills and two blocks. Lutes contributed nine kills and seven digs, and Angelika Vidmar was efficient with six kills on .400 hitting.

For Brock, Chadwick paced all players with 17 kills, while Tuck added 11 kills and four blocks. Emma Baruchelli and Charlotte Ross chipped in 11 and 10 kills, respectively, as the Badgers finished the match hitting .273 as a team.

Following the match, senior captain Abby Delamere reflected on the team's approach and the bond within the group.

"We were just trying to be ourselves and stay connected as a team," said Delamere. "We know how much we love playing together, and that's something we leaned on throughout the match. Being a Marauder has been unreal. The friendships and the people around this program make it such a special place."

Janzen also spoke about the pride he feels in the group following another championship run.

"I can't speak enough about how incredible these players are as athletes, as people, as students, and as leaders," said Janzen. "Our fifth-year players did an amazing job mentoring the younger athletes, and it's a really special group of people. I'm honored to work with them, even on hard days like this."

With the victory, Brock secures the OUA's lone berth at the U SPORTS Women's Volleyball Championship, while McMaster concludes another strong season with a conference silver medal.
