Women's Rugby: Svoboda and French Named All-Canadians

Mac's Sara Svoboda Returned to the All-Canadian First Team, while Britni French debuted in the Second Team Wednesday

One Marauder returned to the ranks of the nation's best Wednesday, while another made her first appearance, as U SPORTS announced its women's rugby major award winners and All-Canadians at the All-Canadian Breakfast in Lethbridge, Alberta.

Having repeated as her division's Player of the Year in October, Marauders eight Sara Svoboda was named a U SPORTS First Team All-Canadian for a second consecutive year, while third-year centre Britni French made her first appearance as an All-Canadian as a member of the Second Team.

McMaster's leader in carries across each of their four regular season contests, Svoboda created more lineouts than any other Marauder, and finished the season with a team-leading total of 46 points, including four tries.

She added a pair of tries in Mac's two playoff contests, including the final scoring play in McMaster's 36-19 win over York in the OUA bronze medal game at Ron Joyce Stadium Oct. 20.

For her part, French was a defensive leader for the Marauders, constantly at the organizational centre of their line, while lurking as a legitimate line-breaking threat in her own right.

The Kinesiology major cracked the divisional all-star team for the second consecutive year.

Wednesday's All-Canadian Breakfast stood as the first official event of the 2017 U SPORTS Women's Rugby Championships, being contested Nov. 2-5 in Lethbridge, Alberta.
