Women's Rugby: Second Half Surge Pushes Mac Past York 42-13

Marauders score five unanswered tries in final 40 minutes

They hung in well until the half, but the York Lions ultimately succumbed to the will of the country's top women's rugby program. McMaster scored five of their eight tries in the second half Friday, rolling to a 42-13 win over York in Toronto.

Authoritative from the eight spot, Sara Svoboda had 17 points in the win, including three tries and Mac's only convert. Veteran fly half Steph Black added two tries, while Colleen Irowa, Katie Svoboda and Maddi Cohoon each crossed the try line once.

With the win, the Marauders improve to 2-0 on the young season.

It was the home side who opened the scoring early, with York's Cat Belanger making good on a penalty goal to give the Lions a 3-0 advantage. Black pegged them back quickly with her first try, before Tobi Anotoma restored York's lead with a try of her own.

McMaster regrouped well before the half, and tries from Irowa and Sara Svoboda, the latter converted as well, gave the Marauders a nine point lead at the break which they would not relinquish.

Five consecutive tries from the defending CIS champions followed after the break, and put a pin in any hopes that the home side may have had. They did, however, receive some late consolation from Mic Stratton, who punched through for the Lions second try of the night.

NEXT UP: The Marauders rematch the CIS final when the Queen's Gaels come to Ron Joyce Stadium on Friday, September 23.
