Football: Seven Marauders Named OUA All-Stars

Recognized for another outstanding season, and a number of standout performances, the McMaster Marauders earned seven all-star selections as the OUA announced its first and second teams for football Wednesday.

Leading the charge, star receiver Danny Vandervoort, offensive lineman Zach Intzandt, defensive lineman Mike Kashak, defensive back Robbie Yochim and kicker Adam Preocanin were named as OUA First Team All-Stars, while the duo of receiver Dan Petermann and defensive lineman Hassan Barry cracked the Second Team.

Wednesday marked a third appearance on the First Team and fourth all-star nod overall for Vandervoort, the former OUA Rookie of the Year who ranked fourth on the Canadian Football League's opening list of draft-eligible prospects this fall. He completed the regular season fourth in the OUA in yards per game (78.9) and hauled in five touchdowns.

Intzandt was confirmed as an all-star for the third time, having being named to the First Team in 2015 and the Second Team in 2014. The 2016 draft pick of the Toronto Argonauts started each of McMaster's eight regular season games and two playoff contests, and was the veteran leader of an offensive line that saw its share of turmoil through injury this season.

On the defensive side, Kashak earned his second consecutive First Team spot, after a season in which he racked up 11.5 sacks and finished just one shy of the U Sports single-season record. The Calgary Stampeders draft pick led the OUA with 16.5 tackles for a loss, totalling 88 yards.

Mac's boundary cornerback, Yochim also earned First Team honours in 2016 after cracking the Second Team in his rookie campaign a year ago, leading the Marauders with three interceptions and 40.5 tackles, while contributing 13 punt returns for 245 yards.

In just his first year as a Marauder, Preocanin not only assumed Mac's place kicking duties, he wrote himself into the program's record book. The Burlington, Ont. native made good on 25 of 33 field goal attempts in 2016, breaking the previous McMaster single-season record of 24 set by CFLer Tyler Crapigna in 2014. He also ranked fourth in the OUA, averaging 38.4 yards per punt.

Wednesday's all-star selection followed Preocanin's being named as member of the OUA All-Rookie Team Tuesday.

Vandervoort's cohort in the McMaster receiving corps, Petermann earned OUA Second Team All-Star honours for the second consecutive season, after being named as the OUA Rookie of the Year in 2014. The third-year receiver continued to excel in his role as Mac's high-volume pass catcher, hauling in 49 receptions for 504 yards and a touchdown in 2016.

His 145 receptions through three seasons ranks Petermann fifth on McMaster's all-time career receiving list.

Wednesday marked a first for the third-year defensive lineman Barry, who earned his first OUA all-star nod with a place on the Second Team. The St. George, Ont. native accumulated 18 tackles while playing in each of Mac's eight regular season games, adding three sacks, five tackles for a loss, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.
