Five Marauders were recognized for their outstanding performances in 2016, as U Sports announced the football All-Canadians and major award winners at the All-Canadian Gala presented by Sun Life Financial at the Hamilton Convention Centre Thursday.
After being included as OUA First Team All-Stars, offensive lineman Zach Intzandt, defensive lineman Mike Kashak, defensive back Robbie Yochim, receiver Danny Vandervoort and kicker Adam Preocanin were named as All-Canadians.
The pair of Intzandt and Kashak cracked the All-Canadian First Team, securing the first All-Canadian nods of their respective careers after starring on McMaster's lines. Intzandt started all eight of McMaster's regular season contests, and both of their playoff games, as the veteran leader of the Marauders offensive line, while Kashak dominated his OUA competition from the end spot, leading the country with 11.5 sacks in 2016.
Reeling in the third All-Canadian honour of his career, Danny Vandervoort was named to the Second Team alongside Yochim and Preocanin, who both made their first appearances on the national honour roll.
Vandervoort, who debuted at no. 4 in the first CFL Draft rankings of the 2017 class earlier this Fall, hauled in 34 passes for 631 yards and five touchdowns in the regular season.
For his part, Yochim led McMaster with 40.5 tackles and three interceptions in his second year in maroon and grey, adding a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and five pass breakups as the team's starting boundary corner.
The OUA's Rookie of the Year, Preocanin set a new McMaster single-season record with 25 field goals in 2016, eclipsing the previous record of 24 set by Tyler Crapigna in 2014. That total put him just one back of the U Sports single-season record of 26, and was achieved on 33 attempts (76 per cent).Preocanin also served as Mac's punter, and ranked fourth in the OUA averaging 38.4 yards per punt.
