The McMaster men's lacrosse team traveled to Varsity Stadium to take on the University of Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday, September 8th, in their first CUFLA contest of the 2013 season. The Marauders built on a strong first-half effort, and completed an 8-5 victory to start the season in the win column.

McMaster opened the scoring early in the 1st quarter, when Carter Williams (Scottsdale, AZ) drove to the net, beat his defender and buried his chance. The Marauders followed with two more tallies by Kyle Lindsay (Whitby, ON) and Mark Phillips (Elora, ON) to go up 3-0. Ryan Adams (Oakville On) converted on a man advantage for McMaster, and the Marauders closed out the first quarter with a 4-1 lead.

McMaster would not relinquish its advantage for the remainder of the contest, and enjoyed leads of 6-3 at half and 7-3 at the end of the 3rd quarter.

The Marauders strong defensive play was anchored by 2nd-year goalie Max Yavitt (Ithica, NY), who made 18 stops in McMaster's opening-day victory. The offence was led by Williams, who notched three goals and one assist, and Phillips, who added three goals. Lindsay and Adams chipped in one goal apiece, and Mitch Iszkula (Hamilton, ON) recorded two assists.
