PHILLIPS SCORES FIVE AS MEN'S LACROSSE BOOKS A PLAYOFF SPOT

The Marauder men's lacrosse team clinched a playoff spot with their second consecutive win at home, beating the Laurier Golden Hawks 10-9 on Friday. The result marked the second time this season that McMaster has gotten the best of Laurier.

Mark Phillips – who currently sits sixth in CUFLA goal scoring – had a game-high five goals.

Laurier's Brandon Petter would score the first of the game at 3:45 of the first quarter to get the Golden Hawks on the board. McMaster would answer on the man advantage with a goal from Kyle Lindsay, after connecting with Mitch Iszkula. Phillips would put in back-to-back goals in the first, but with a goal just over 18 minutes in from Laurier, the teams would end the first quarter tied at 3.

McMaster wouldn't take the lead back until 15:40 in the second quarter, but they managed to keep the lead for the duration of the game. Phillips put in the last goal of the first half and started a four-goal streak for the Marauders.

Laurier broke up McMaster's 4-goal streak later in the third with their only goal of the quarter. The Golden Hawks' attempt to come back in the fourth wasn't enough as Phillips put in his fifth of the game and 26th on the season for Mac's 10th and final goal.

McMaster's scoring was rounded out by Mitch Iszulka (one goal, three assists), Kyle Lindsay (one goal, two assists), Justin Beatty (one goal, one assist), Ryan Adams and Tristan Schram, each with 1 goal.

The Marauders' defence was led by strong performances by long pole Jamie Morrison and goalie Max Yavitt, who made 14 stops.

The Marauders' last playoff appearance was in 2011, when they bowed out against Brock.

McMaster's last championship was in 2010 after entering the playoffs with a .500 record in the regular season.

The Marauders host Guelph on Sunday in an afternoon matchup at Alumni Field, their last game of the regular season. That contest is scheduled to get underway at 2:00 p.m.
