The Marauder men's lacrosse team moved to fourth position in the CUFLA standings with a 13-7 victory over the Toronto Varsity Blues on Friday.
The Marauders had seven different goal scorers on Friday night, including Tristan Schram and Lucas Lepore with their first goals of the season. Mitch Iszkula led the Marauders with a six-point performance, while Mark Phillips and Carter Williams both enjoyed four-point games.
The Marauders started the first quarter with back-to-back goals, with the first coming courtesy of Kyle Lindsay, followed by Iszkula, both goals with the assist from Williams. It would take Toronto almost five minutes before finding the back of the net, and the Marauders answered with a three-goal streak. It included back-to-back goals from Phillips and another from Iszkula.
McMaster led by three going into the second quarter, but wouldn't put anything on the board until Phillips scored at 16:29 to start a five-goal streak that would carry into the third. The run was broken by Michael Buwalda -- the leading scorer for Toronto -- who put in four of the five goals for the Varsity Blues on the night.
McMaster would play a portion of the fourth a man down, but with strong penalty killing would only give up one goal on the Blues powerplay to Justin Crofts. The Marauders managed to capitalize twice on powerplays of their own, getting goals from Iszkula and Lepore.
McMaster's defence was once again anchored by a very strong performance from Max Yavitt who faced 27 shots and stymied the Varsity Blues shooters all night, including taking away what should have been a sure goal on a breakaway.
With Friday's win, the Marauders move to a 4-6 record and keep their playoff hopes alive. Their next game will be at Alumni Field against the Laurier Golden Hawks on Friday, October 18. That match up is scheduled to get underway at 7:00 p.m.
