Hamilton, Ont. - The McMaster Marauders fell to the Brock Badgers on Alumni Field on Wednesday night by a score of 10-9.
The Badgers began the scoring in the first quarter with a goal from Dustin Dunn (Peterborough, Ont.), assisted by Brandon Staal (Curtis, Ont.) in the third minute of the game. McMaster stormed back though, with three goals in a row. Jamie Batten (Caledon, Ont.) would score two on the power play with assists from Mitchell Iszkula (Hamilton, Ont.) and Carter Williams (Scottsdale, AZ) and Williams would get one of his own with an assist by Rob Murray (Toronto). Brock would score one more in the dying minutes of the quarter from Steve Priolo (St. Catharines, Ont.).
Up 3-2, the Marauders would be unable to hold onto the lead for long. Brock would score three to go ahead 5-3. Greg Davidson (Toronto) and Jordan Weedmark (Carleton Place, Ont.) would get unassisted goals and Travis Gibbons (Owen Sound, Ont.) would get one of his own from Justin Pychel (Welland, Ont.), all within the first ten minutes of the second quarter.
McMaster would score their only goal of the quarter with six minutes to go on a power play from Ryan Adams (Burlington, Ont.), assisted by Batten. Brock would scored two more before the first half was over with another goal from Gibbons, and another from Davidson.
Heading into the third down 7-4, the Marauders knew they had to get some work done to regain the lead. They did just that, shutting out the Badgers in the third quarter and scoring four goals to go ahead 8-7. Taylor Dredge (Milton, Ont.) got the scoring started with an assist from Murray. Adams would score his second of the game from Iszkula, Williams also got his second of the game from Murray's third assist and Iszkula got one of his own from Batten.
The final quarter of the game saw Brock pull out three goals throughout the quarter. Weedmark scored two more and Davidson tallied his third of the night. All goals were assisted by Staal. Down by two, the Marauders scored with four minutes to go. Mark Phillips (Kitchener, Ont.) would get the goal with an assist from Brent Murphy (Fergus, Ont.).
Unfortunately, the Badgers would hang on for the win, shutting out the Marauders from a tying goal at the end of the fourth.
On September 20, the Marauders traveled to Guelph, Ont. to take on the Guelph Gryphons. They were unable to get the win, losing 23-5. Goal scorers for McMaster were Brandon Burr (Sarnia, Ont.), Quinn Welychka (London, Ont.), Batten with two and Iszkula.
The Marauders are in action next on Sunday September 30. They host the Toronto Varsity Blues on Alumni Field at 1pm.
