WOMEN'S RUGBY SUFFERS SECOND LOSS OF THE SEASON TO NO. 5 GAELS

Hamilton, Ont. - The No. 9 McMaster women's rugby team fell to the Queen's Gaels on Alumni field on Saturday afternoon. In their fourth game of the season, the Marauders were unable to stop the Gaels as they lost by a score of 32-5.

The first attempt to score came very early in the first half, but rookie Stephanie Black (Ottawa, Ont.) was unable to put the ball between the posts on the penalty.

It would take another 15 minutes before the Gael's got their first try of the match. Lauren McEwen (Wasaga Beach, Ont.) scored her first try, but Nadia Popov (Newmarket, Ont.) would miss the convert.

The Marauders would even up the score soon after. Former CIS Women's Rugby Rookie of the Year Cindy Nelles (Belleville, Ont.) would push through from a scrum to get the try for McMaster, but Black would be unable to make the convert.

From there, Gaels Susan Heald (Burlington, Ont.) and McEwen would put up two more tries and Popov would score a convert down the pipe just before half to lead 17-5.

Ten minutes into the second half, Queen's would strike again with another try from McEwen to take a commanding 22-5 lead.

Later, with 15 minutes to go in the game, Nelles would strike again. Her second try of the game would give McMaster 10 points, but it would be the last time the Marauders would reach the scoreboard as Black's convert would hit the post.

Before the game was over, Queen's would put the nail in the coffin with two more tries, from Kayla Roote (Peterborough, Ont.) and Caitie Ryan (Kamloops, BC). The final score would be in favour of the Gaels 32-10.

McMaster plays on the road next weekend against the Brock Badgers on September 29.
