SOCCER LIONS TAME MARAUDERS 3-1

In a CIS top-ten match-up, the 7th-ranked York Lions handed 4th-ranked McMaster its first loss of the 2012 season with a 3-1 decision at Ron Joyce Stadium.

The first half saw York take advantage of a poor clearing attempt by the Marauders and Adrian Pena chipped the ball over Mac keeper Angelo Cavalluzzo to take a 1-0 lead after only 10 minutes of action.

In the 39th minute, the Lions again caught McMaster napping in their own end and Joe Cicchillo broke in alone and scored to increase their advantage to 2-0, which is how the half ended.

The Marauders wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in the second half, when Ryan Garnett's free kick from 30 yards out  was headed in by Mark Reilly, and the momentum shifted back toward McMaster.

Despite pressing for the equalizer, it was York that scored the next goal when the Marauders were called for a hand ball in the box, and Pena buried the resulting penalty kick to restore the Lions’ two-goal advantage.

A red-card assessed against York gave McMaster a man advantage for the last 20 minutes of the contest, but the Marauders could not narrow the gap, and York held on for the win.

The McMaster men’s soccer team will look to get back in the win column on Saturday, September 15 versus the Guelph Gryphons.  Game time at Ron Joyce Stadium is 3:15 pm.
