Hamilton, Ont. - The McMaster men's lacrosse team suffered another loss to the Guelph Gryphons on Wednesday night at Alumni Field by a score of 17-8. Mitchell Iszkula (Hamilton, Ont.), Mark Phillips (Alma, Ont.) and Jamie Batten (Bolton, Ont.) all earned three points in the game.
The first quarter would see the Gryphons get two quick goals from Andrew Stoner (Orangeville, Ont.) and Mike Burke (Caledon, Ont.). McMaster would respond with a goal of their own from Phillips, assisted by Ian Waud (Hamilton, Ont.). Before the first quarter was up, Guelph would get one more for the 3-1 lead from Jordan Deradick (Welland, Ont.).
Around the first minute and a half McMaster got their second goal of the game from Ryan Adams (Oakville, Ont.)), assisted by Phillips for hiw second point of the night. Unfortunately for the home team, it would be all downhill from there. Guelph would score eight unanswered goals to gain a considerable lead going into the second half. Goal scorers included Deradick with his second and third of the night, Burke with his second goal, Curtis Knight (Oshawa, Ont.) with two of his own, Garrett Williams (Oshawa, Ont.), and Eric Hubert (Mississauga, Ont.). The Gryphons would be up 11-3 going into the second half.
Both teams would switch goalies, with Wes Kendall (Thunder Bay, Ont.) replacing Max Yavitt for the Marauders. In the third quarter, the Gryphons would outscore McMaster again. The Marauders would score three, from Taylor Dredge (Milton, Ont.), assisted by Iszkula on the power play, Carter Williams (Scottsdale, AZ) assisted by Batten on the power play, and Iszkula would get a goal of his own, assisted by Phillips. Guelph would score four in the third quarter with two goals from Hubert, one from Connor Deuchars (Toronto) and another from Taylor Brown (Peterborough, Ont.).
McMaster would score of first goal of the fourth from Ben Blaine. Iszkula would get his second of the game later on with the assist coming from Batten and Batten would finish off the game with a power play goal with the help of Adams. Jordan Costa (Mississauga, Ont.) and Joe Lalonde would score for the Gryphons in the final quarter.
Guelph would win it 17-8.
McMaster heads to Toronto to take on the Varsity Blues for the second time in less than a week, hoping to pull off another win. Game time is set for Friday October 5 at 7pm.
