Hamilton, Ont. - The No. 6 McMaster men's soccer team took down the Waterloo Warriors in their last regular season home game by a score of 3-1. The Marauders firmly hold on to second place in the OUA West with 31 points.
Just six minutes in, the Marauders were the first to get a goal in the match. Forward Paterson Farrell (Oakville, Ont.) scored a header off a corner kick to get things going.
Later in the first half, Waterloo would tie it up with a goal from Adam Craig (Toronto) with a rebound off the post. This would be the only goal to beat McMaster goal keeper Angelo Cavalluzzo (Hamilton, Ont.).
At the beginning of the second half, the Marauders would score again, this time coming from sweeper Garret McConnville (Ottawa, Ont.) on a strike from inside the 18-yard box.
In the 63rd minute, Cavalluzzo would make a key save off a Waterloo free kick for the score to remain 3-1.
Ten minutes later, McMaster's Gersi Xhuti (Etobicoke, Ont.) would have a great opportunity to score after beating two Waterloo defenders. The forward would try to go short side on the Warrior goal keeper but would hit the post on the attempt.
Then, in the 74th minutes of the match, the Marauders would seal the deal with another goal. Rookie Ryan Garnett (Waterloo, Ont.) would kick a corner kick into the box and would connect with Daniel Niksic (Stoney Creek, Ont.) for the header goal.
The Marauders are now four points ahead of Guelph for second place in the OUA West and with a second place finish will get a bye in the first round of playoffs. They will host an OUA quarter-final match next weekend if this should happen.
McMaster heads to Laurier on Sunday to finish off the regular season.
