Hamilton, Ont. — The McMaster Marauders saw their 2026 season come to a close Saturday afternoon, falling 33-17 to the Ottawa Gee-Gees in the opening round of the OUA playoffs. Following a third-place regular-season finish, McMaster entered the postseason with a 6-2 record, but Ottawa's offence found greater success after halftime, allowing the visitors to pull away for the victory.
The Marauders opened the scoring on their first possession, with quarterback Lucas Barresi connecting with Shane Wismer for a three-yard touchdown at the 9:05 mark of the opening quarter. Michael Horvat added the convert to put McMaster ahead 7-0. Ottawa responded with a rouge before taking an 8-7 lead late in the quarter, when quarterback Josh Janssen connected with Emyl Gregoire for an 18-yard touchdown with 1:55 remaining.

With 31 seconds remaining, running back Micah Duchene finished the possession with a three-yard rushing touchdown, while Horvat added the convert to put the Marauders ahead 14-8.
McMaster's late second-quarter lead was short-lived, as Ottawa responded in the closing seconds. A 66-yard touchdown pass with just four seconds remaining in the half put the Gee-Gees back in front, and the successful convert gave Ottawa a 15-14 lead heading into halftime.
Ottawa extended its advantage early in the third quarter, opening with a 24-yard field goal after advancing 56 yards on six plays. The visitors followed with another scoring drive, finishing the possession with a five-yard rushing touchdown with 7:40 remaining in the quarter to increase their lead to 25-14.
The Marauders responded with a 63-yard drive of their own, capped by a 34-yard field goal from Horvat with 2:59 remaining in the third quarter. McMaster moved the ball downfield over 10 plays, bringing the score to 25-17 heading into the final period.
The Gee-Gees added another touchdown in the fourth quarter, finding the end zone on a 15-yard passing play with 4:25 remaining. Following the convert, a rouge at the 1:11 mark brought the final score to 33-17.
Barresi led McMaster offensively, completing 22 of 41 passes for 251 yards and one touchdown while adding 69 rushing yards on eight carries.
Denkers led the receiving corps with eight catches for 92 yards, while Duchene added five receptions for 77 yards, providing another option in the passing game alongside his rushing touchdown. Wismer finished with three receptions for 15 yards and McMaster's opening touchdown, while Davis recorded two catches for 21 yards. Burch contributed 20 yards on one reception, with Schlachter adding two catches for 18 yards and Gale recording one reception for eight yards.
Alongside Barresi, Kalen Tan added 52 yards on five carries, including a 28-yard gain. Duchene finished with four rushing yards on six attempts, recording McMaster's second major of the afternoon.

McMaster entered the playoff match-up without several key contributors, as Sean Underhill, Isaiah Shields, Christian Chukwuali II, and Nick Garcia were unavailable for the contest. Their absences left the Marauders without several experienced defensive players against an Ottawa offence that recorded 462 total yards.
McMaster recorded 25 first downs and finished with 376 yards of total offence, including 251 passing yards and 125 rushing yards. The Marauders generated production through both the passing and rushing games, but were unable to turn those opportunities into enough points to keep pace.
Saturday's result brings McMaster's 2026 campaign to a close with a 6-3 overall record. The Marauders finished third in the OUA standings after winning six of their eight regular-season games before hosting Ottawa in the opening round of the postseason. With several key contributors expected to return next season, the Marauders will look to regroup during the offseason and build on this year's campaign heading into 2027.
