Marauders claim inaugural Battle of Lake Ontario with 26-6 win over Toronto

Marauders secure playoff berth as Denkers tops 100 receiving yards and defence holds Toronto without a touchdown in inaugural rivalry matchup

HAMILTON, Ont. — The McMaster Marauders claimed the first edition of the Battle of Lake Ontario on Friday, defeating the University of Toronto Varsity Blues 26-6 at Ron Joyce Stadium to open the newly established rivalry with a victory.

Playing in front of an enthusiastic school-day crowd ahead of Thanksgiving weekend, McMaster combined a touchdown-free defensive performance with four Michael Horvat field goals to earn its fifth win and secure a playoff berth.

The Marauders generated 474 yards of total offence and 28 first downs, while holding Toronto to 243 yards and two field goals. Despite the result, head coach Stefan Ptaszek identified areas requiring improvement as McMaster approaches the postseason.

"There's some learning we've got to capture, but we're getting to the back end of the season," Ptaszek said. "We're definitely going to the playoffs now that we've got a fifth win, and we've got to find a way to play our best football and go forward."

Quarterback Lucas Barresi completed 25 of 38 passes for 305 yards and two touchdowns. Tight end Nathan Denkers led the receiving corps with six catches for 102 yards, providing a dependable target throughout the afternoon.

"Lucas and I were really on the same page a lot of the time, which helps, and he was giving me great balls," Denkers said. "So honestly, I can't take all the credit for that."

McMaster's defence created the first scoring opportunity when Aidan Moore forced an Omarion Martin fumble that Ryan Broome recovered near midfield. Horvat finished the ensuing possession with a 19-yard field goal.

Toronto responded with a Filippo Marcello field goal to tie the game 3-3 after the opening quarter, but McMaster took control before halftime.

Horvat restored the lead with a 22-yard field goal before Aidan Moore delivered a pivotal third-down stop, denying Toronto quarterback Kaleb O'Donoghue on third-and-one and giving the Marauders possession at the Varsity Blues' 44-yard line.

Barresi connected with Denkers on third down to extend the drive, and Adams Yusuph followed with consecutive productive runs. Yusuph then caught a 17-yard touchdown pass with 1:11 remaining in the half. Horvat added a 32-yard field goal before the break, putting McMaster ahead 16-3.

Toronto opened the third quarter with a lengthy possession, but the Marauders limited the visitors to another field goal.

McMaster answered through the air. Ben Kingston made consecutive receptions of 16 and 17 yards before Barresi found Shane Wismer for a 10-yard touchdown, extending the lead to 23-6 following Horvat's convert.

Wismer finished with five catches for 34 yards, while Kingston contributed four receptions for 45 yards.

Safety Sean Underhill helped protect the advantage with a fourth-quarter interception and 15-yard return. He credited the defensive call for putting him in position to make the play.

"I only get that interception because of the play call," Underhill said. "That's not typically where I am on the field, so I'm grateful for that play call, perfect timing."

Christian Chukwuali II recorded two sacks, Nick Garcia added another, and Moore led McMaster with six total tackles. The defence repeatedly prevented Toronto from capitalizing on four interceptions thrown by Barresi.

Kalen Tan paced the rushing attack with 63 yards, while Alec Sellars added 47 yards on four carries. Horvat's fourth field goal, from 29 yards, completed the scoring late in the fourth quarter.
With the first rivalry victory secured, Denkers emphasized the offence's next objective.

"Finishing the drives is a huge point of emphasis for us," he said. "That's something that we're hungry and motivated to do."

McMaster now turns its attention to Waterloo as preparations for the playoffs continue.
