— The Marauders begin the 2024 campaign with a tie on the road and a win in front of the home crowd.
At York Lions Stadium on Friday, the McMaster Marauders (1-0-1) opened their season with a 2-2 draw against the York Lions (0-0-2).
McMaster took an early lead when
Jade Abreo (Mississauga, Ont.) scored a phenomenal top right corner goal in the 21st minute, making it 1-0. The Marauders extended their advantage just before halftime with a goal from fifth-year
Bryanna Caldwell (Tottenham, Ont.), assisted by
Ravina Braich (Oakville, Ont.), to go up 2-0.
York then mounted a comeback in the second half. The red and white cut McMaster's lead to 2-1 with a goal in the 50th minute. The Lions equalized in the 67th minute, bringing the score to 2-2.
Despite several opportunities for both teams, the score remained level, and the match ended in a 2-2 draw.
On Sunday evening, the Marauders faced the Brock Badgers (0-2) in their home opener and secured their first win of the season with a 2-1 victory.
The Badgers got off to a strong start, scoring the first goal of the match in the 8th minute. Trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Marauders turned things around in the second half. At 65:20, fourth-year midfielder Abreo assisted Sephar Alena (Milton, Ont.), who scored a quick goal to equalize the match.
Later in the game, Abreo had an opportunity to extend the lead with a penalty kick but was unsuccessful. The Marauders also hit the crossbar with a couple of shots on goal in the 74th minute. The Marauders relentless effort was finally rewarded as Braich dribbled through Brock's defense, causing the ball to deflect off a Badger player into their own net to give the Marauders the lead.
After a successful weekend, the Marauders will aim to improve their record as they travel to Windsor, Ont. on Friday evening to face the Lancers (0-1-1).
