Box Score 2 HAMILTON, Ont. —The McMaster Marauders (6-2-3) took on the 8
th nationally ranked, Guelph Gryphons (8-2-1) in two matches over the weekend.
Match 1 vs Guelph
On Friday, the Marauders celebrated senior night at Ron Joyce Stadium. The Gryphons started the scoring in the 11
th minute, with the Marauders almost tying the match right back with a great opportunity for
Jade Abreo (Mississauga, Ont.) who just missed high about two minutes later.
The match went back and forth until senior,
Bryanna Caldwell (Tottenham, Ont.) scored a beautiful header on a corner kick that was sent by Abreo equalizing the game. At half-time, the match was tied at one a piece. Marauders goaltender, Alexandra Mudie (Burlington, Ont.), had a productive half making three saves.
When play resumed, McMaster came out hungry. In the 51
st minute,
Nicole Astaiza (London, Ont.) took a monster strike from the 20-yard line to record her first career goal and gave the maroon the 2-1 lead. The maroon played a strong defensive second half, shutting down the Gryphons attack. The Marauders would earn the 2-1 win gaining their sixth win of the season.
Match 2 vs Guelph
On Sunday, the Marauders looked to complete the weekend sweep. The Gryphons would draw first blood in just the second minute of the match, swinging the momentum in their favour. The Marauders would answer right back in the 13
th minute with a goal by
Alena Spehar (Milton, Ont.), her fourth of the season.
The rest of the half was a mostly defensive battle. Very few shot attempts between the teams, and it remained 1-1. Play resumed and the maroon had their chances early.
Madison Goertz (Saskatoon, Sask.) had an early opportunity saved. In the 55
th minute,
Jade Abreo would finish her eighth goal of the season. Astaiza picked up the assist on the play.
The Marauders played a defensive game the rest of the way attempting to put the game away. They would be mostly effective until the 80
th minute where Guelph would score. The match ended in a score of 2-2, earning McMaster's fourth point of the weekend.
