Marauder magic in stoppage time helps punch ticket to OUA quarterfinals

Box Score

HAMILTON, Ont. — After finishing the regular season last Saturday against Waterloo, the McMaster Marauders (7-2-3) faced the Laurier Golden Hawks (3-5-4) at home in the first round of the OUA playoffs.

The Marauders won the game 2-1 in overtime.

McMaster finished third in the OUA west division this season with a total of 24 points. The Birds won their last meeting this season against Laurier 1-0 and this second meeting would not disappoint.

The first half ended scoreless, despite McMaster having a few nicely placed corners and free kicks into the box.

Laurier would score first to take the lead in the 58th minute. McMaster had a large amount of possession but was not able to convert until Jade Abreo (Mississauga, Ont.) sparked some Marauder magic with a rocket free kick into the back of the net. Abreo's goal, deep into stoppage time would send the game into extra time.

The game winner came in the second half of overtime with Abreo taking a corner, which connected with Lorena Morcone (Hamilton, Ont.) to send the Marauders to the OUA quarter finals.

The Marauders fought for bronze in the OUA playoffs last season and have their sights set on another podium finish this year.
