Marauders head to Waterloo on Saturday to face Warriors

HAMILTON, Ont. - After three weeks of 2022 OUA action, the Marauders are looking to get in the win column. Last Saturday's game versus the Ottawa Gee-Gees at Ron Joyce Stadium was a tight contest that narrowly favoured the Marauders in first downs, total offence, passing yards and total return yards. But it was the Gee-Gees defence that stole the game for the visitors. Despite the loss, McMaster averaged 5.7 yards per rush and had 364 total yards of offense plus a season-leading 48 tackles on the defense and will look to build on last week's performance. This week marks the official halfway point of the OUA season for the Marauders and there is no better time than now to secure the first win of the season.

McMaster @ Waterloo
Warrior Field | Waterloo, Ont.
September 17th, 2022 @ 1pm

McMaster and Waterloo last met during the shortened 2021 season when McMaster took the game 34-13 thanks to a career day from Liam Putt who recorded 142 yards and two touchdowns. The Marauders have owned this series, going 54-19-1 in all match-ups with the Warriors. McMaster has won nine of the last ten contests.

Last Saturday, DeEmetrius Masuka (Hamilton, Ont.) tallied four solo tackles and three assists, including one for a loss of two yards for the maroon and grey. Andreas Dueck (Winnipeg, Man.) recorded 29 completions for 279 yards and one touchdown. Jacob Mason (Burlington, Ont.) and Daniel Bosett (Brantford, Ont.) split rushing duties for the Marauders, combining for 52 yards on the ground.

Waterloo (1-1) is coming off a 41-35 loss to the Guelph Gryphons. The Warriors mounted a significant comeback against the Gryphons, tying it 35-35 with four minutes to play after trailing by as much as 18 in the third quarter. The Gryphons secured the game in the final minute of play to drop the Warriors to .500 on the season.

The Marauders' offense found its rhythm over the past two games and will look to find holes in the Warriors' defence to secure a win on the road.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Marauders will need to keep eyes on James Basalyga. The receiver has 248 receiving yards on the season and averages 27.6 yards per catch and 124 yards per game, leading the league in each category. He is also the OUA leader in touchdowns with five over his two games played in 2022. The Warriors like to go long and test the opposition's secondary and have been successful with this strategy this season. Four of Waterloo's seven passing touchdowns this season have come from receptions of over 30 yards so the maroon and grey will need to keep the black and gold in their sights.

The Marauders will head into the bye week after Saturday's contest before facing the defending Vanier Cup Champions, the Western Mustangs, on October 1st at Ron Joyce Stadium.

All Time

The Marauders and Warriors first met in 1948 and Saturday's game will mark the 75th meeting between the two. McMaster leads the all-time series 54-19-1.

Last Time Out

McMaster had a chance to pull out a last second victory in last week's game. McMaster performed an onside kick which was perfectly executed to set up two shots at the end zone and potentially win the game in the final seconds. Kicker Ben MacDonald of Kamloops, BC, hit a high hanger with defensive back DeEmetrius Masuka of Hamilton making an athletic play to take possession.
