HAMILTON, Ont. - It has been 307 days since the Marauders women's soccer team last stepped on the field for an OUA competition. With the 2022 season opener just days away, the Marauders are more than ready to get rolling. McMaster will open the campaign on the road in London on Saturday to face the Western Mustangs before returning home to Ron Joyce Stadium for the second half of the weekend's home-and-home. Game time is set for 1pm both days.

Season Preview

The 2022 OUA women's soccer season begins this weekend and will look a little different than last season. The conference will return to two-divisions (East and West), as opposed to the three-division, OUA East, OUA Central and OUA West format of 2021. Each team will play 12 regular season games and, at the conclusion of the regular season, the top six teams from each division will qualify for the playoffs. 

Forward, Joelle Chackal (Ottawa, Ont.), led the Marauders in both scoring and points in 2021 with four goals and one assist in eight games played and returns to the lineup this season. Victoria Orfei (Hamilton, Ont.), Emilie Calabrese (Ancaster, Ont.) and Megan Mamela (Brantford, Ont.) will join Chackal as attacking forces for the maroon and grey this season. Chackal and Calabrese were named 2021 OUA Central All-Stars last season.

New additions to the Marauders' roster include Madison Goertz (Saskatoon, Sask.), Julia Kutman (Ottawa, Ont.) , Jana Febbraro (Hamilton, Ont.), Jenine Alkhatib (Unionville, Ont.), Mia Paiement (Hamilton, Ont.) and Lorena Morcone (Hamitlon, Ont.). Head Coach, Miranda Wiley, is excited to see the six student-athletes from the 2022 recruiting class hit the field. "Each of these players will come into the team and have an immediate impact as we look to continue to build on the foundation set last season." 

Although new to McMaster, Goertz is no stranger to U SPORTS soccer. The former UNB Red will be continuing her education in Hamilton as she pursues a Masters of Science in Mathematics this fall. While at UNB, the Saskatoon local was awarded Women's Soccer Rookie of the Year in 2018 and was named the captain of the team in 2021. "Madison will bring with her leadership experience and a level of maturity having already played 4 years of university soccer," explained Wiley. 

On the defence, the Marauders return a core group of veterans including Franka Subic and Tiam Pourbakhtiari, both in their third year of eligibility. With only one new addition on the back line and three goalkeepers in their first year in the maroon and silver, McMaster is The Marauders held their opposition to just one goal against on average, per game, in 2021 and will look to further the defensive hold this season.

No tickets will be required to attend all six of the Marauders' regular season home games at Ron Joyce Stadium.
